Calvin Graduates Are Part of Super Bowl XLIV
Monday, February 08, 2010
Kiff Vanden Heuvel, a 1992 Calvin College graduate, made his Super Bowl debut Sunday night.
Also a 1988 Grand Rapids South Christian High School graduate, Vanden Heuvel served as the lead pitchman for a series of Denny’s ads that appeared throughout the second half of Sunday night’s CBS broadcast of the Super Bowl game between the New Orleans Saints and Indianapolis Colts. Vanden Heuvel’s first ad appeared in the third quarter as he promoted Denny’s upcoming free Grand Slam breakfast promotion on February 9. He later did the voiceover for a series of subsequent ads for the Denny’s promotion.
Vanden Heuvel’s ad can be found on the CBS Web site at: Super Bowl Ads Link - Vanden Heuvel Denny’s Ad (choose third quarter ads: Free Grand Slam).
A communications, arts and science major at Calvin from 1988 to 1992, Vanden Heuvel was a regular in Calvin’s Theatre program while a student. During his Calvin student days, he was also the lead host of Calvin’s popular homecoming “Air Band” competition for several years. In March of 1992, he also played a key role in hosting a pep rally for the Calvin men’s basketball team prior to its trip to Gustavus Adolphus (MN) for the sectional round of the NCAA III Tournament. Calvin continued on to win the sectional and later the NCAA III Championship two weeks later.
Vanden Heuvel currently resides in Chicago, Illinois. He is an alumn of the Grand Rapids based River City Improv team and currently serves as an instructor and director in the Chicago-based Second City comedy theatre group in Chicago while also serving as an actor and voice specialist. Vanden Heuvel was not the only Calvin graduate to be involved in the Super Bowl Sunday night as 1995 Calvin College graduate Ian Tigchelaar was present at the game as a member of the New Orleans Saints’ front office staff. Like Vanden Heuvel, Tigchelaar is also a graduate of Grand Rapids South Christian High School.
