For the second time in his career, Calvin College senior A.J. Dufendach has received MIAA Player of the Week honors in men’s soccer. Dufendach has been named MIAA Offensive Player of the Week after a strong week of play in the midfield that helped Calvin clinch a share of the MIAA title and a berth in the upcoming NCAA III Tournament.

A senior from Grand Rapids and a graduate of Grand Rapids Forest Hills Northern High School, Dufendach dominated the midfield as Calvin defeated Olivet, 4-1 last Tuesday, and then tied Hope 1-1 on Saturday afternoon. Dufendendach assisted on Calvin’s only goal against Hope, and also demonstrated fine ball control and solid tackling on both ends of the field.

A year ago, Dufendach was named MIAA Defensive Player of the Week.

Ranked 21st nationally, Calvin is currently 14-3-1 overall and 11-0-1 in MIAA play. The Knights will close out their regular season schedule this week with a Wednesday night game at Adrian (6:00 p.m.) and a Saturday home contest against Trine at 2:00 p.m. Both games will air via Stretch Internet broadcast.Broadcast Link

Meanwhile, Two members of the nationally-ranked Calvin women’s volleyball team have received MIAA Player of the Week honors. Calvin junior Sara Kramer has been named MIAA Player of the Week while senior setter Lauren DeGroot has been named MIAA Specialty Player of the Week.

A native of Dyer, Indiana, Kramer had 46 kills and 16 blocks in five matches last week as the Knights went 5-0. In three conference matches, Kramer had a .359 hitting percentage with only four errors. She is receiving MIAA Player of the Week honors for the first time.

DeGroot is receiving MIAA Specialty Player of the Week honors for the second time this year and for the sixth time in her career. DeGroot dished out 193 assists (12.1 per game) and added 34 digs, 11 blocks, nine kills and five aces as Calvin won five consecutive matches. In a four-set victory over Alma, DeGroot distributed 46 assists and added 11 digs, three blocks, and three aces.

Ranked 14th nationally, the Calvin volleyball team is currently 25-4 overall and will host Kalamazoo Tuesday night at 7:00 p.m. at the Huizenga Tennis and Track Center with the match scheduled to be broadcast on-line via Stretch Internet. Broadcast link
