Calvin Cross Country Teams Compete at Michigan Intercollegiates

HILLSDALE – The Calvin men’s cross country team finished sixth overall and third among small college schools at the Michigan Intercollegiates hosted by Hillsdale College late Friday afternoon. The annual race included schools from all over the state of Michigan from the NCAA Division I, II and III levels as well as NAIA institutions.
Calvin posted a team score of 101 competing against Division II, Division III and NAIA schools with Saginaw Valley State first (50) and Hillsdale third (83).
Resting some of its top runners, Calvin was led by sophomore Ethan Anderson (Stillwater, MN/Stillwater Area HS) who was 18th in the 8K race in a time of 27:47 while freshman Drew Woznick (Rockford/Rockford HS) was 19th (27:48), sophomore Jonathon Gingrich (Powell, OH/Olentangy Liberty HS) 20th (27:48) and junior Steven Haagsma (Grandville/Calvin Christian HS) 21st (27:55). The race by Haagsma was his first of the season.
Junior Stephen Tubergen (Naperville. IL/Neuqua Valley HS) was 23rd (28:09) and freshman Alex Johnston (Eugene, OR/Henry D. Sheldon HS) 27th (28:14) to round out Calvin’s top finishers.
In the women’s 5K race, Calvin was sixth overall and tops amongst Division III schools. Calvin had an overall team score of 173 points.
Like the men, the Calvin women rested several of its key runners as sophomore Hope Gaffner (Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS) led Calvin, placing 25th (19:44) while freshman Jessie Mulder (Holland/Holland Christian HS) was 31st (19:50), junior Lizzy Vannette (Visalia, CA/Central Valley Christian HS) 34th (19:54), senior Natalie Patterson (Richland/Gull Lake HS) 41st (20:06.00), freshman Lauren Strobehn (Stillwater, MN/St. Croix Prepatory) 47th (20:15), senior Margeaux Carter (Yellow Jacket, CO/Montezuma-Cortez HS) 53rd (20:32) and freshman Kristen Brink (Dyer, IN/Illiana Christian HS) 54th (20:33) to round out Calvin’s top seven.
Both Calvin teams will now prepare for the rugged Wisconsin-Oshkosh Invitational next Saturday.
