Calvin College Graduates Compete at U.S Olympic Marathon Trials

U.S Olympic Marathon Trials Results

HOUSTON, TX - Three Calvin College graduates ran in the U.S. Olympic Marathon trials on Saturday. In the men’s race, Calvin graduates Paul Petersen and Jed Christiansen finished 55th and 61st respectively. A 2001 Calvin graduate, Petersen took 55th with a time of 2:20.31. A 2010 Calvin graduate, Christiansen finished 61st in a time of 2:21.09.

The men’s race was won by 2004 Olympic silver medalist Meb Keflezighi in a time of 2:09.08 while defending Olympic Trials champoin Ryan Hall was second (2:09.30) and Abdi Abdirahman third (2:09.47). The top three finishers in the race earn spot on the U.S. Olympic team. Former Rockford High School standout Dathan Ritzenheim just missed a spot on the Olympic team, finishing fourth in a time of 2:09.55.

In the women’s race, 2008 Calvin College graduate Christina Overbeck took 108th in a time of 2:48.25. Her race came just over a month after she had qualified for the trials with a time of 2:44.44 at a last-chance meet in Sacramento, California.

The women’s race was won by Shalene Flannagan in 2:25.38 while Desiree Davila was second (2:25.55) and Kara Goucher third (2:26.06) to fill out the U.S. Olympic Women’s Marathon team.
