BLOOMINGTON, IL - The Ryan Souders era of Calvin men’s soccer opened on a winning note as Calvin defeated Augustana 4-1 Friday night at a tournament hosted by Illinois Wesleyan University.
The contest was the first for Calvin under first-year head coach Ryan Souders and the Knights did not disappoint, bolting out to a 3-0 halftime advantage. The two teams then traded single goals in the second half as the Knights cruised to the win.
Senior Joe Broekhuizen (Grandville/South Christian HS) put the Knights on the board with a blast on a free kick just outside the box in the 7th minute of play. Junior Ben Honeycutt (Grandville/South Christian HS) then took a corner kick from junior Zach Willis (Grandville/Unity Christian HS) a few minutes later and cracked in a shot to put the Knights up 2-0.
In the 25th minute of play, Broekhuizen scored his second goal on a nifty give-and-go with sophomore teammate Travis Vegter (Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS).
Augustana scored in the opening minutes of the second half but Calvin answered with an unassisted goal by Willis in the 62nd minute to close out the scoring.
“It was a good opening game,” said Souders in his collegiate debut as a head coach. “I thought our first two goals were very well struck off set pieces. I thought our defensive back line did a good job and our goalkeeping was strong.”
Calvin held a 17-9 shots at goal advantage. Senior Jared Rushlau (Grandville HS) had one save in gaining the win in nets for the Knights.
Calvin will now prepare to face host Illinois Wesleyan Saturday night at 8:30 p.m.
