Calvin Claims Come-From-Behind Wins At Puget Sound Premier Invitational

TACOMA, WA - The second-ranked Calvin women’s volleyball team pulled out a pair of come-from-behind victories on Friday at the University of Puget Sound Premier Invitational.
Calvin opened the day with a 17-25, 25-11, 25-15, 25-20 victory over 15th-ranked Wartburg and then topped Pacific Lutheran 21-25, 23-25, 25-23, 25-11, 15-12.
In the win over Wartburg, Calvin picked up 12 kills, 32 assists and six digs from senior setter Megan Rietema (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS). Juniors Emily Crowe (Granger, IN/Mishawaka HS) and Ellie Diepersloot (Madera, CA/Chowchilla HS) and sophomore Maggie Kamp (Palos Heights, IL/Chicago Christian HS) had nine kills apiece. Kamp also had 20 digs while senior Kristen Zietse (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) had 19 digs.
In the win over Pacific Lutheran, Calvin had four players amass double-digits in digs led by Zietse who tallied a career-high 29 digs while Maggie Kamp had 16 digs, Rietema 14 digs and sophomore Jamie Kooiman (Eugene, OR/South Eugene HS) 13 digs.
Rietema just missed a triple double as she also collected 42 assists and nine kills. Maggie Kamp had a team-high 18 kills while Crowe had 10 kills and Diepersloot seven kills.
In set five, Calvin held a 9-4 lead only to see Pacific Lutheran roar back with an 8-1 run to build a 12-10 lead. Calvin responded with five straight points to clinch the match however.
Calvin returns to action on Saturday when it faces host and ninth-ranked Puget Sound at 3 p.m. (EST). The contest will be a rematch of last year’s NCAA III quarterfinal match that was played in Holland and won by Calvin in four sets. The Knights will then face Whitman College (Wash.) at 7 p.m. (EST).
