Earlier this summer two former Calvin basketball players, Derek Griffin and Brent Schuster, had an extremely unique opportunity to team up and participate in a FIBA-sponsored 3x3 basketball tournament. They were invited to play after winning a “Hoop It Up” 3x3 tournament the year before. Several teams from across the United States participated and the gold medal team would be selected to play in the FIBA 3x3 world tour in Athens, Greece. The tournament lasted a few days and was held at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs. Griffin is also now participating in the FIBA-sponsored 3x3 world tour. Griffin and Schuster teamed up with Chris Holloway (Mount Olive College) and Corey Campbell (Chaminade University) and eventually took home the bronze. While they did not earn the trip to Athens, both agreed that it was a very unique opportunity and an overall great experience. The team that beat them had former players from Gonzaga, St. Mary’s, Purdue, and William & Mary.
Griffin, a 2008 graduate, grew up in Whitehall, Michigan and went to Whitehall High School. He became an NJCAA All-American at Muskegon Community College before choosing to finish his collegiate career at Calvin. Griffin brought his prolific scoring ability with him, averaging about 15 points per game in back-to-back seasons in a Knights uniform. He is currently the Regional Director of Youth Basketball for the Denver Nuggets. In addition to his work with youth basketball, he also holds basketball training sessions, helps with game entertainment, and works with marketing and promotions. The busiest chunk of Griffin’s schedule comes during the summer when he runs 12 different week-long camps.
Schuster is an alumnus of Denver Christian High School, where he won back-to-back State Championships his junior and senior seasons. At Denver Christian he had the privilege of playing for Coach Dick Katte, who is a Calvin alum and member of the Colorado Sports Hall of Fame. Standing 6’11,” Schuster excited the Calvin fans during his playing career with emphatic blocks and long range shooting. Schuster is now an Inside Sales Representative with the Denver Nuggets and Colorado Avalanche.
Schuster, a die-hard Nuggets fan, says “it is so great to be able to call the Pepsi Center my ‘office’, and to be able to sell something that I experienced growing up with and am passionate about. I’m looking forward to seeing where this can lead, and I’m hoping to move up in the company.”
Both Griffin and Schuster give 100% credit to Calvin for their current positions. Schuster believes “Calvin has a great network of alumni throughout the country which helps recent graduates find some great connections right away.” When reflecting on their careers in a Calvin uniform, Coach Kevin Vande Streek replied “Derek and Brent were special players to coach because of how gifted offensively they both were; more importantly I have had the privilege of seeing them grow as men over the years.”
