Calvin Baseball Team Currently 2-2 in Arizona

PHOENIX, AZ - The Calvin baseball team is currently 2-2 on its spring trip in Arizona and 2-4 overall on the season. On Friday, Calvin suffered a 13-4 defeat to Hamline University but came back to sweep a doubleheader from Gustavus Adolphus on Saturday by scores of 11-10 and 10-7. Sophomores Peter Steiner and Keith Spoelstra picked up the victories in the doubleheader sweep.
On Monday, Calvin suffered a 17-15 defeat to Eastern Connecticut State, ranked fifth in the most recent Division III Top 25 poll of the year. Calvin (2-4) held a 14-13 lead heading into the top of the ninth but Eastern Connecticut State (11-0) rallied with four runs on three hits. Calvin came back with a run in the bottom of the ninth on an RBI single by freshman Tyler Berger but the Knights left the tying runs on base.
Calvin collected 15 hits in the loss with senior Nate Pocock batting 3-for-4 with four RBIís including a three-run homer in the fifth. Freshman Scott Burden also had three hits and two runs batted in while junior Kyle Gurzynski had two hits and two RBIís. In addition, Berger had three hits while junior Matt Schepel and senior Jason May had two his apiece.
Freshman Zach Thomas started the game and went 4.2 innings, striking out one and walking one. Junior Rob Kool took the loss for Calvin and was one of four Calvin pitchers used in relief.
Calvin is scheduled to face Williams College in a doubleheader. On Wednesday, Calvin will face nationally-ranked Southern Maine in a single game.
