Calvin Baseball Splits Doubleheader at Adrian

ADRIAN – Calvin gained a split of a series-opening doubleheader at Adrian Friday afternoon, losing the opener 8-7 in nine innings before coming back to win game two 8-3.
In the opener, Calvin built a 4-1 lead but the host Bulldogs rallied for four runs in the bottom of the sixth to take a 5-4 lead. Calvin (10-13 overall, 9-5 MIAA) answered back with three runs in the top of the seventh with the key blow a two-run RBI double by senior Mike Fuller (Sylvania, OH/Southview HS). Adrian once again put the rally caps on in the bottom of the seventh, scoring a pair of runs includ-ing the game-tying score with two outs to send the game into extra innings.
Calvin was unable to mount a threat in either the eighth or the ninth. The Bulldogs (15-9, 9-5 MIAA) then scored the winning run on a one-out single after a batter had singled and moved to second on an error. Freshman Jalen Bouma (Ann Arbor/Ann Arbor Huron HS) took the loss for the Knights to fall to 0-1 on the season. Calvin had 10 hits in the loss led by sophomore Grant VanPutten (Holland/Holland Christian HS) who went 3-for-5 with a pair of runs scored. Junior Jeff Victor (Holland/Holland Christian HS) was the starting pitcher for the Knights, going five innings, striking out three and walking one.
In game two, Calvin broke open a 4-2 game with a run in the fourth and three in the fifth. VanPutten had another superb game, going 3-for-4 with three runs batted in. Freshman Jordan VanderWall (Wy-oming/South Christian HS) also went 2-for-4 while Bouma batted in three runs, driving in one on a sac-rifice fly and another on a run-scoring double.
Junior Grant VanderWall (Wyoming/South Christian HS) went the distance to pick up his second win against two defeats. He struck out four and walked three.
The two teams were scheduled to play at Calvin on Saturday in a 2 p.m. doubleheader. That twinbill has now been moved to Monday at Calvin with a 2 p.m. scheduled start.
