Calvin Athletes Compete at GVSU Big Meet - Prepare to Host Calvin Invitational Saturday

ALLENDALE - A small group of Calvin track and field athletes competed in the Division I and Division II dominated Grand Valley State Big Meet on Friday night.
On the women’s side, senior Jodi Hoekstra (Homer Glen, IL/Chicago Christian HS) had a strong time of 17:31.69 that will put her in contention for a top-10 spot on the national NCAA III indoor performance list. Sophomore Kimby Penning (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) also had a strong time of 18:29.75.
In the men’s 5,000 meters, senior Dan Kerr (Petoskey/Petoskey HS) had a season-best indoor time of 14:38.52 that should also place him in the top 10 on the national NCAA III indoor list. Senior Job Christiansen (New Ipswich, NH/Mascenic Regional HS) added a time of 14:55.22 while junior Phillip Spitzer (Buckley/Buckley HS) came in at 15:20.71 and sophomore Jacob Kuyvenhoven (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) at 15:24.43.
The bulk of Calvin’s team will compete in its own Calvin Invitational Saturday inside the Huizenga Tennis and Track Center. Field events will begin at 11:30 a.m. with running events set to start at 1 p.m.
