Bressler & Oosterhouse Named to Capital One Academic All-District Teams

GRAND RAPIDS - Two Calvin student-athletes have received Capital One Academic All-District honors in the women’s at-large college division as named by the College Sports Information Director’s Association of America (CoSIDA). Seniors Melissa Oosterhouse and Monica Bressler have been named to the all-district IV first team in the college division.
As members of the first team, Oosterhouse and Bressler now advance to the national ballot and are eligible for Capital One Academic All-America consideration.
During her four years, Oosterhouse has served as the team’s number-one singles player in every match she has competed in. During her career, Oosterhouse has fashioned a singles record of 77-13 and a doubles record of 60-28. She is the Calvin career leader in singles victories.
Oosterhouse has been a four-time first team All-MIAA selection – one of only 13 individuals in MIAA women’s tennis history to do so. In 2009, she was selected as the MIAA recipient of the Sue Little Sportmanship Award. In 2011, she was named the recipient of the MIAA’s Karen Caine Scholar-Athlete Award. In 2010 and 2011, she was named the MIAA’s Most Valuable Player.
In 2008 and 2009, she was a part of Calvin teams that finished as league runner-ups. In 2010, she led a Calvin team that captured its first MIAA title since 1982 and gained its first-ever NCAA III Tournament berth. Calvin’s record during her four years was 58-29.
In the classroom, Oosterhouse is a biology major with a minor in biochemistry. She carries a 3.94 grade point average and has been a regular member of the Calvin Dean's List and MIAA Academic Honor Roll.
Bressler is from Sandusky, Ohio. She is a graduate of Perkins High School. She is receiving academic all-district honors for the second straight year.
Bressler has been a four-year member of the Calvin women’s swimming and diving program and a three-time All-MIAA selection.
At the MIAA Championships this past February, Bressler was the league champion in the 100 backstroke (59.04) and 200 backstroke (2:09.02).
In 2010, she captured league titles in the 50 freestyle (23.76), 100 backstroke (58.34) and 200 backstroke (2:09.94).
She also qualified for the 2010 NCAA III Championships in the 100 and 200 backstroke events and in several relays.
She was also a national qualifier for the 2009 NCAA III Championships and picked up All-America honors twice as she was a member of Calvin’s eighth place 200 freestyle and 400 medley relay teams. She has also been a member of three honorable mention All-America relay teams at Calvin, placing 10th in the 200 medley relay at the 2009 national meet and 12th in 200 medley relay and 16th in
the 400 medley relay at the 2010 national meet.
She has also helped the Calvin women’s swimming and diving team capture four MIAA titles and finish seventh at the 2009 NCAA III Championships and 24th at the 2010 NCAA III Championships.
An accounting major, Bressler carries a 3.75 grade point average. She is a seven-time member of the Calvin Dean’s List and a three-time member of the MIAA Academic Honor Roll.
