GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Blake Boehm has been named head women’s varsity lacrosse coach at Calvin College. A 2007 Calvin College graduate, Boehm will lead the Calvin women’s lacrosse team into its first varsity season next spring. Boehm has held the head coaching position of the Calvin women’s club lacrosse program since the 2007-08 academic year. He was graduated from Calvin with a degree in exercise science while also holding a minor in biology.
“We are very pleased that Blake will continue to lead our women’s lacrosse program,” said Calvin women’s director of athletics Dr. Nancy Meyer. “Blake is passionate about the sport of lacrosse and has already established himself as an excellent coach, both in his tactics and in his teaching of the skills. He is also very committed to the mission of Calvin College. I am confident he will do a great job as our varsity head coach.”
A native of Stevensville and a 2002 graduate of Stevensville-Lakeshore High School, Boehm was an accomplished three-sports high school athlete, competing in cross country, wrestling and track and field. “I chose Calvin out of out high school because I wanted to attend a small Christian college with excellent academics,” said Boehm. “I was also interested in athletics but I found out that as a runner, I was not good enough to compete at the college level.”
Boehm then discovered the Calvin men’s lacrosse program and joined the team as a freshman. Lacrosse proved to be a perfect niche for Boehm as an athlete as he was a four-year member of the Calvin men’s club lacrosse program, playing at a faceoff midfielder position. He was a captain during his junior and senior years and was part of Calvin teams that went undefeated four consecutive years in CCLA Tournament play. He was also part of Calvin teams that advanced to the national tournament in 2005 and 2006.
He later served as a student assistant coach with the Calvin women’s volleyball team in 2006 with the Knights reaching the regional finals and posting an overall record of 34-2.
He then assumed the head coaching duties of the Calvin women’s club lacrosse team in the fall of 2007. In 2008, he led Calvin to an 11-0 record and a WCLL Division B Conference Championship. In 2009, Calvin moved up to Division I club status and still managed to produce an overall record of 7-6. In 2010, Calvin moved back to Division II club status and has played at that level the last three years. “I’ve enjoyed working with Blake for the past five seasons, and I am very excited to continue that working relationship,” said Meyer.
Calvin will be making the transition from club to NCAA III varsity status for the 2012-13 academic year and will compete in a full MIAA regular season next spring. The winner of the 2013 MIAA Tournament will also gain an automatic bid to the NCAA III Tournament.
“Making the move to varsity status and into the MIAA is very exciting,” said Boehm. “Our current players are very excited about the opportunity next spring and we are also seeking out new student-athletes to join our program. Calvin offers an outstanding Christian education and a varsity athletics program with deep tradition.”
Boehm resides in Grand Rapids and is employed by the Greater Grand Rapids YMCA as a health and wellness director.
