Calvin split a doubleheader with Trine Tuesday afternoon to remain at .500 in league play. The Knights are now 4-4 in conference action. Calvin took Tuesday’s opener 3-2 and then dropped game two 2-0.
In game one, junior Jeff Victor cruised through five innings of shutout ball before the Thunder rallied for two runs in the top of the sixth inning to tie the score 2-2. Calvin took a 1-0 lead on an RBI single by sophomore Garrett Harder (Fenwich/West Michigan Lutheran HS) in the first and then built a 2-0 advantage on an RBI double by Harder in the fifth.
Calvin (5-12 overall) took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the sixth as freshman Jordan VanderWall (Wyoming/South Christian HS) singled and later scored on a Trine error. Victor then tossed a 1-2-3 seventh to pick up his second victory of the year. VanderWall and sophomore Grant VanPutten (Holland/Holland Christian HS) had two hits apiece to lead Calvin’s seven-hit attack.
In game two, Calvin was limited to five hits by the Trine pitching staff while the Thunder scored a single run in the first and a single run in the fifth. Calvin rallied in the bottom of the seventh, loading the bases with one out but the Knights were retired with back-to-back pop-outs.
Junior Grant VanderWall (Wyoming/South Christian HS) took the loss, striking out five and walking two in six innings of work. Calvin had no player with more than one hit in the game. VanderWall had three stolen bases on the afternoon to build his season total to 14 and his career total to 35. VanPutten is now in third place on the Calvin career list for stolen bases and is within six thefts of becoming Calvin’s career leader.
