Calvin was unable to use home field advantage to its advantage Monday afternoon as the Knights dropped both ends of a conference doubleheader with visiting Adrian, losing game one 7-0 and game two 9-1. Adrian (17-9 overall, 11-5 MIAA) moves into a tie for first place with Hope with the victories while Calvin (10-15 overall, 9-7 MIAA) is now tied for third place with Trine.
In the opener, Calvin was able to muster only three hits while Adrian erupted for 12 hits including a pair of solo home runs. Adrian also had four doubles in the game for a total of six extra-base hits. Sophomore Grant VanPutten (Holland/Holland Christian HS), senior Ben Cok (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) and freshman Jordan VanderWall (Wyoming/South Christian HS) accounted for Calvin’s three hits with VanPutten belting a double - his eighth of the season. Sophomore Nate Schepers (Holland/Holland Christian HS) took the loss for Calvin to fall to 2-1 on the year. Schepers struck out three and walked three in five innings of work. Sophomores Austin Juza (Stevensville/Lake Michigan Catholic) and Tom Bouwkamp (Pella, IA/Pella Christian HS) also saw time in relief.
In game two, Calvin rapped out eight hits but could never string enough hits together. Adrian meanwhile picked up four runs in the third innings and never looked back, adding single runs in the fourth and sixth and three more in the seventh. Calvin’s lone run came in the bottom of the seventh as sophomore Ben Wohl (Canton/Plymouth HS) delivered an RBI single. Freshman Tyler Lambers (Holland/Holland Christian HS) and senior Tyler Tos (Walnut Creek, CA/Berean Christian HS) had two hits apiece for the Knights. Junior Cory Laster (Ludington/Ludington HS) took the loss to fall to 1-4. Laster struck out five batters in six innings of work. Junior Louis Hill Jr. (Romulus/Romulus HS) and freshman Kyle Wasserberger (Spring Lake/Spring Lake HS) came on in relief later in the game.
Calvin will now prepare for a single non-conference game at Division I Central Michigan University Tuesday afternoon at 4:05 p.m. in Mount Pleasant.
