The Knights took the first half of a double-header versus Kalamazoo on Thursday, winning by a score of 2-1.
Senior Keith Spoelstra (4-2) was strong on the mound for the Knights, pitching a complete game three-hitter.
Calvin owned a 1-0 lead during the early portion of the game, but the Hornets tied it up in the top of the fifth.
Calvin responded in the bottom of the inning by loading the bases. The Knights could only get one run out of the inning on a two-out RBI single by senior Peter Steiner, leaving the score at 2-1.
Once again in the bottom of the sixth, the Knights loaded the bases. This time, they were unable to score. In the top of the seventh, Spoelstra walked the lead-off batter but kept his composure to close the game with three straight strikeouts.
Calvin then completed a sweep of the double-header, winning the second game 1-0.
On the mound for the Knights was senior Peter Steiner (3-2), who threw seven innings of scoreless baseball and allowed only five hits.
The Knights struggled to manufacture runs at times, however. In the bottom of the fourth, Calvin loaded the bases but the Knight bats were unable to turn it into any runs.
Calvin didnít get on the board until the seventh inning when Trent Zwiers singled towards second base, scoring Dann Happ. Zwiers reached base on all three of his plate appearances, drawing a walk once and notching two base hits.
In the top of the seventh, Steiner forced a one-two-three inning out of the Hornets, sealing the victory for the Knights.
Kalamazoo pitcher Phil Earls was credited with the loss, despite surrendering only five hits. Kalamazoo is now 9-9 overall in 6-6 in the MIAA.
The victory improved Steinerís record to 3-2 and advanced Calvinís overall record to 12-11 and 8-6 in conference.
