Baseball Splits Saturday Doubleheader With Olivet - Splits Weekend Series Wtih Comets
Saturday, March 30, 2013
Fighting through injuries and illness, the Calvin baseball team found a way to gain a doubleheader split against Olivet on Saturday and in the process a split of the four-game weekend series with the Comets.
Calvin opened Saturday’s twinbill with a 4-2 loss but came back to defeat the Comets 4-3 in game two. The Knights are now 3-3 in MIAA play heading into a Tuesday makeup doubleheader against Trine scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. at Calvin Field.
In Saturday’s opener against Olivet, Calvin trailed 3-0 as the Comets scored two in the second and one in the top of the sixth. Calvin (4-11 overall) rallied for two runs in the bottom of the sixth as freshman Tyler Lambers (Holland/Holland Christian HS) drove in one run with an infield single and freshman Taylor Pruis (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) scored on an Olivet error. Calvin then had runners on first and third with one out when freshman Michael Kamp (Homer Glen, IL/Chicago Christian HS) ripped a line drive that was speared by the Olivet pitcher and turned into an inning-ending double-play. The Comets then scored an insurance run in the top of the seventh and the Knights stranded two runners in the bottom half to close out the game.
Sophomore Jeremy Kamp (Homer Glen, IL/Chicago Christian HS) took the loss for Calvin to fall to 0-2 on the year. Freshman Jalen Bouma (Ann Arbor/Ann Arbor Huron HS) went 2-for-4 at the plate in the loss.
In game two, sophomore Nate Schepers (Holland/Holland Christian HS) made his first pitching appearance in nearly a month as he relieved freshman starter Travis Kraai (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) in the third. Schepers went the next 3.2 innings of relief to gain the win while junior Jeff Victor (Holland/Holland Christian HS) tossed a shutout inning in the seventh to pick up the save.
Calvin scored three runs in the bottom of the first as Bouma, senior Ben Cok (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) and sophomore Garrett Harder (Fenwick/West Michigan Lutheran HS) all delivered RBI singles. Olivet answered with three runs in the top of the second but Calvin pushed ahead the go-ahead run in the bottom half as sophomore Ben Wohl (Canton/Plymouth HS) plated freshman Jordan VanderWal (Wyoming/South Christian HS) with a run-scoring groundout.
In the seventh, Olivet loaded the bases with one out but Victor was able to get out the jam with a strikeout and a pop-foul to the catcher.
Sophomore Grant VanPutten (Holland/Holland Christian HS) went 2-for-4 for the Knights with a double and a triple while Jordan VanderWall went 3-for-3.
