Baseball Splits Doubleheader With Olivet

Calvin split a doubleheader with the visiting Comets of Olivet on Saturday, winning the opener 7-5 and losing the nightcap 8-2. The Knights are now 12-17 overall and 9-11 in MIAA play.
In game one, Calvin built a 4-0 lead with three runs in the first and one in the second. Freshman Tyler Tos (Walnut Creek, CA) had a two-run RBI single in the first. Olivet (6-23, overall 4-16 MIAA) came back with two runs in the top of the third but the Knights answered with a run in the bottom half on a sacrifice fly to center by Tos that plated freshman Ben Cok (Grand Rapids Christian HS) who had reached on a one-out double.
Olivet scored two runs in the fourth and one in the fifth to tie the game 5-5 but Tos broke the tie with an RBI bunt single in the bottom of the fifth and sophomore Jake VanAlten (Holland Christian HS) drove in a second run with a bases-loaded walk.
In the seventh, Olivet placed runners on second and third with one out but senior Rob Kool (Grand Rapids Christian HS) was able to come on in relief to get the Knights out of the jam with back-to-back ground balls that did not advance either runner. Kool picked up the save with his seventh inning performance while sophomore Joe Lambers (Grosse Pointe, Mich.) picked up the win in relief to up his record to 1-1 on the year.
Calvin had 10 hits in the game one win including two from Tos who drove in a career-high four runs.
In game two, Calvin grabbed a 2-0 lead with single runs in the first and second. In the second, Tos doubled and scored on a single by VanAlten. Calvin junior pitcher Keith Spoelstra (Oakland, NJ) kept Olivet hitless through the first three innings but ran into trouble in the fourth as Olivet senior Erik McCloud belted a two-run homer to left and the Comets followed with two more unearned runs to take a 4-2 lead. In the sixth, the Comets put the game away with three unearned runs.
Calvin outhit Olivet 9-4 in the loss but stranded seven baserunners. Calvin also committed four errors which led to seven unearned runs. Spoelstra took the loss to fall to 4-3 on the year. Cok and senior Kyle Gurzynski (Ludington HS) had two hits apiece for the Knights in the loss.
Calvin returns to action next Thursday when it hosts Trine in a conference doubleheader at 2 p.m. at Calvin Field.
