Baseball Splits Doubleheader at Olivet

OLIVET - Calvin split a doubleheader at Olivet on Friday, winning game one 6-3 and losing game two 4-3. The Knights are now 11-16 overall and 8-10 in MIAA competition.

In game one, junior Peter Steiner (Chicago, IL) went the distance, striking out four and walking one while scattering seven hits. Steiner was staked to an early lead as the Knights scored four times in the top of the first inning on the strength of two hits and one Olivet error. Freshman Ben Cok (Grand Rapids Christian HS) smashed his second home run of the season in the inning while junior Cody Batchelor (Durango, CO) had an RBI single.

Olivet cut the lead to 4-1 with a run in the second but Calvin answered back with a run in the fifth on a sacrifice fly by freshman Grant Jobkar (Manchester, MI). Cok then drove in his second run of the game with a sacrifice fly in the top of the sixth to put the Knights on top 6-1. Olivet scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth but Steiner set Olivet down in order in the bottom of the seventh to pick up his fourth victory of the season against two defeats.

Calvin collected eight hits in the win with junior Andrew Bosma (Holland Christian HS) and Batchelor collecting two hits apiece.

In game two, Calvin outhit Olivet 9-7 but the host Comets scored three times in the bottom of the fifth to break a 1-1 tie. Calvin scored two runs in the top of the sixth inning on a two-run RBI single by sophomore Scott Tipton (Stow, OH) that plated freshman David Noorman (Covenant Christian HS) and sophomore Tyler Berger (Grand Rapids Christian HS). In the seventh, Calvin put one runner on with two outs but could not bring home the tying run.

Cok and Batchelor had two hits each. Freshman Eric Poencet (Northview HS) took the loss, allowing six hits in 4.1 innings of work. Sophomore Joe Lambers (Grosse Pointe) also came on in relief for 1.2 innings of work.

The two teams are scheduled to resume the four-game weekend series on Saturday with a doubleheader at Calvin at 1 p.m.
