Saturday, May 02, 2009
OLIVET – The Calvin baseball team gained a doubleheader split at Olivet Friday afternoon, dropping the opener 6-1 and then coming back to win the nightcap 8-6 in eight innings.
The Knights are now 16-16 overall and 13-7 in the MIAA while Olivet is 15-7 in league play.
In the opener, Olivet handed Calvin starting pitcher Ben Sietsema (Northpointe Christian HS) his first conference defeat of the year, collecting 11 hits. Olivet led just 1-0 but then scored two runs in the fifth and three more in the sixth to put the game on ice. Calvin was limited to five singles by Olivet starting pitcher Tyler Kelly.
In game two, Calvin held off a late Olivet rally and then won the game in extra innings. Olivet tied the game 6-6 on a run in the bottom of the seventh inning and had the winning run on third base with one out but relief pitcher Zach Thomas (Bradenton, FL) was able to get out of the jam on a short fly ball to right and a subsequent strikeout.
With new life, the Knights scored two runs in the top of the eighth as freshman Jake Van Alten (Holland Christian HS) scored on a wild pitch and junior Kyle Gurzyski scored on a sacrifice fly by senior Nate Pocock (Wayland, MA).
Thomas then pitched a scoreless eighth to gain his second victory of the year without a defeat.
Seniors Chris Blacklidge (Comstock Park HS) and Kyle Cousins (Holland Christian HS) had two hits apiece while sophomore Matt Dodrill (Murfreesboro, TN) also had two hits.
The two teams will meet again on Saturday for a doubleheader, slated to start at 1:00 p.m.
