Friday, February 28, 2014
DANVILLE, KY - The Calvin baseball team escaped the frozen wonder winterland of West Michigan and officially opened its 2014 season in the less frigid climate of Kentucky Friday afternoon and evening. Calvin opened the day with a 7-3 loss to Defiance College of Ohio but came back to defeat the host Colonels of Centre 6-1 in an evening matchup.
GAME ONE - Defiance 7, Calvin 3
Defiance broke a 3-3 tie with two runs in the top of the seventh and added two unearned runs in the eighth to pull away for the win.
Defiance took a 2-0 lead off of starter Peter Cupery (Holland/Holland Christian HS) but the Knights tied the game 2-2 as senior Matt Schepel (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) delivered an RBI single and Cupery followed by driving in a run on a fielder’s choice.
The teams traded runs in the fifth. Calvin scored when junior Grant Van Putten (Holland/Holland Christian HS) led off with a single, stole second base and later scored on an error.
