Baseball Gains Doubleheader Split at Olivet - To Host Comets on Saturday

OLIVET – Calvin gained yet another MIAA doubleheader split on the road Friday afternoon, defeating Olivet 11-3 in the second game of a doubleheader after falling 4-2 in game one.
In the opener, Calvin (3-10 overall, 2-2 MIAA) fell behind 4-0 but came back late, scoring two runs in the sixth before falling just short. Sophomore Garrett Harder had a two-run RBI single in the sixth inning as the Knights outhit the Comets 7-6. Junior Cory Laster (0-2) took the loss as he struck out five without a walk in six innings of work.
In game two, Calvin broke open a 3-3 tie with two runs in the fourth, three in the sixth and three in the seventh to pull away for the win. Sophomore Austin Juza picked up his first collegiate win, going five innings and scattering seven hits. Junior Grant VanderWall came on in relief to toss two shutout innings of relief, lowering his season earned run average to 3.38.
Sophomore Grant VanPutten had a pair of hits in game one. In game two, freshman Michael Kamp went 4-for-4 while freshman J.R. Frederick went 3-for-3. Harder also had a pair of hits as did freshman Travis Kraai. Kraai drove in three runs while Frederick and freshman Jalen Bouma drove in two runs apiece.
