Box Score Information

ADRIAN - Calvin opened its 2011 MIAA campaign with a pair of narrow defeats at two-time defending league champion Adrian Tuesday afternoon. Calvin dropped the opener of Tuesday’s twinbill 3-2 and then fell 4-2 in game two.

Calvin received strong pitching performances in both games but could not muster the run support needed to gain victory.

In game one, junior lefthander Joe Lambers went six strong innings but took the hard-luck loss as he struck out three and walked three. Adrian broke loose for a pair of runs in the bottom of the first on two hits, a hit batter, a walk and a sacrifice fly. Lambers settled in from there however, allowing just four hits over the next five innings. Adrian scored the eventual winning run in the fourth, taking a 3-0 lead but Calvin came back with two runs in the top of the sixth inning as senior Andrew Bosma ripped a run-scoring double with the Knights also using an Adrian error to score a second run.

In the top of the seventh, Calvin placed runners on second and third with only one out but Adrian starter Ryan Domschot was able to bear down and strike out the final two batters to extinguish the Knight threat. Domschot picked up the win for Adrian, striking out 11 Calvin batters while allowing only three hits.

In game two, Adrian grabbed an early lead once again, scoring a run in the bottom of the first on a sacrifice fly. The Bulldogs added an unearned run in the bottom of the third to take a 2-0 lead but Calvin came back to tie the game with two runs in the top of the fourth as sophomore Tyler Tos belted a two-out, two-run RBI single with the bases loaded.

Adrian came back with single runs in the fifth and sixth innings however to take a 4-2 lead and the Knights were unable to answer as they were limited to one hit over the final three innings of play. Senior Keith Spoelstra took the loss for Calvin, striking out two and walking four in six innings of work. David Partyka got the win for Adrian, striking out eight and scattering five hits.

The two teams will meet again Wednesday afternoon for a doubleheader - this time at Calvin Field with the first pitch set for 2 p.m.
