Saturday, April 06, 2013
Calvin completed a four-game series sweep of Kalamazoo on Saturday, defeating the Hornets 5-0 and 6-1 in a doubleheader at Calvin Field. Calvin is now 8-4 in the MIAA and 9-12 overall.
In Saturday’s game one 5-0 win, Calvin scored two runs in the first and added three more in the fourth while junior Cory Laster (Ludington/Ludington HS) went the distance to pick up the shutout win. Laster struck out one and did not walk a batter while scattering four hits. Sophomore Ben Wohl (Canton/Plymouth HS) drove in Calvin’s first run on a fielder’s choice and senior Ben Cok (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) later scored on a wild pitch. In the fourth, Cok belted a three-run homer to left.
In game two, juniors Louis Hill Jr. (Romulus/Romulus HS), Jeff Victor (Holland/Holland Christian HS) and Grant VanderWall (Grand Rapids/South Christian HS) combined to hold Kalamazoo to just one run. Hill (1-0) was credited with the win as he went the first four innings and allowed just two hits and one run.
Calvin collected 12 hits including three off the bat of freshman Travis Kraai (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS). Wohl, freshman Tyler Lambers (Holland/Holland Christian HS) and junior Kyle Spoelma (Kentwood/South Christian HS) all had two hits apiece. Spoelma drove in a pair of runs while freshman Jalen Bouma (Ann Arbor/Ann Arbor Huron HS) drove in three runs.
Calvin will now prepare to host Adrian next Thursday in a twinbill at 2 p.m. at Calvin Field.
