GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has named Saint Mary’s guard Maggie Ronan and Calvin forward Ally Wolffis its Players of the Week in women’s basketball for games played through January 22.
Wolffis, a sophomore from Muskegon (Mona Shores HS), scored 36 points and pulled down 14 rebounds for the week as the Knights won three straight games to move into sole possession of first place in the MIAA. She scored seven points, including a key basket and free throw down the stretch, as Calvin handed top-ranked Hope its first loss of the season, 56-55 on Tuesday night. The Calvin victory snapped an eight-game losing streak against Hope and allowed the Knights to move into sole possession of first place in the MIAA standings.
Wolffis then followed with 15 points in 15 minutes of action in an 81-37 win over Trine, and made all seven of her field goal attempts for 14 points in a 74-60 win over Saint Mary’s. Wolffis, who is being honored as Player of the Week for the first time in her career, made 16 of 24 field goal attempts (67 percent) for the week.
On the year, Wolffis is averaging 10.9 points and 3.9 rebounds a game while connecting on a team-leading 61.0 percent of her field goal attempts. She has notched double-digits in scoring eight times this year including a career-high 21-point effort in a 76-55 win at Saint Mary’s on December 4.
Calvin is currently 15-3 overall and 9-0 in the MIAA. The Knights are one game ahead of Hope (8-1) and two-and-a-half games ahead of third place Albion (6-2). The Knights visit Albion Wednesday night for a key 7:30 p.m. contest at Albion’s Kresge Gymnasium.
