Al Hoekstra Named Great Lakes Region Women’s Assistant Coach of the Year

For the first time in his career, Calvin College distance coach Al Hoekstra has been named the Great Lakes Region Assistant Coach of the Year inw omen’s track and field. A 26-year distance coach at Calvin, Hoekstra is being honored by the United States Track and Field Coaches Association.

This spring, Hoekstra has helped coach five distance athletes that are entered in the NCAA III Championships in the distance evnets, a championship high. His distance runners swept the top four positions at the MIAA Championships in the women’s steeplechase and the top three in the 10,000 meters.

Hoekstra has two distance runners seeded in the top five in their events this weekend as senior Elizabeth Smit is seeded third in the steeplechase while senior Jessica Koster is seeded fourth in the 10,000 meters.

Hoekstra has also coached three individuals on the men’s side that are headed to the NCAA III Track and Field Championships in distance events with all three competing in the steeplechase and one also competing in the 5,000 meter run.

Calvin is sending 16 athletes to the NCAA III Track and Field Championships this weekend at Baldwin-Wallace College in Berea, Ohio, including 12 from the women’s team and four from the men’s team.
