2013 Women’s Golf Preview
Tuesday, August 27, 2013
With six returning letterwinners including one returning first team All-MIAA selection, the Calvin women’s golf team has hopes of once again finishing in the top four of the MIAA regular season fall standings and qualifying for the subsequent MIAA Spring Tournament that determines the league’s automatic qualifier to the NCAA III Championships.
Calvin has qualified for the spring tournament the last two years by finishing fourth in both the 2011 and 2012 MIAA fall regular season standings.
Leading the list of returning golfers is senior Carlia Canto (Marysville, Mich./Port Huron Northern HS) who was a 2012 first team All-MIAA choice and a 2011 second team All-MIAA selection. Last fall, Canto finished third in the final MIAA fall regular season standings with a Calvin single-season average of 81.3 strokes-per-round. She later placed in the top six at the final two rounds of the MIAA spring qualifying tournament. Canto was one of five underclassmen on the 2012 All-MIAA first team and should be part of a talented group of conference golfers this fall.
Of course depth is needed for a solid team score and Calvin did just that in the 2012 fall season, averaging a Calvin single-season record team average of 343.0 strokes-per-round. Although Calvin graduates a pair of key seniors in Elise Doezema and Rachel Whitaker, the Knights do have experienced letterwinners returning as well as four incoming first-year golfers.
Sophomore Casey Harkema (Holt, Mich./Holt HS) is one of the returning golfers to watch as she placed 16th in the final MIAA fall standings with an average of 88.5 strokes-per-round.
Other returning letterwinners include sophomore Jennie Poole (Summit, NJ/Kent Place School), Sarah Arendsen (Wayland/Wayland HS), Shara Reynolds (Big Rapids/Big Rapids HS) and Jeryl Schudel (Adrian, Mich./Joy of Knowledge Tutorial).
Poole was 19th in the MIAA fall standings at 88.8 strokes-per-round while the other three individuals have moments of contribution as freshmen both in the fall and in the spring. Arendsen served as Calvin’s fifth golfer at the two final MIAA spring tournament rounds, carding scores of 96 and 92.
“We have a solid group of returning golfers and some promising newcomers which leads us to be optimistic for the upcoming season,” said Calvin women’s golf coach Jerry Bergsma. “Our program has steadily improved the last 3-4 years and we’re looking to continue that trend this fall and hopefully this spring. Our league is very competitive when it comes to women’s golf so we have our work cut out for us.”
The fall schedule is a busy one for the Knights as they will host tournaments on September 21 and October 2. The September 21 tournament is the non-conference Calvin/Hope Invitational at Railside Country Club in Byron Center. The October 2 tournament will be the third of six MIAA Tournament rounds scheduled for the fall league season and will take place at the Thornapple Pointe Golf Club.
Calvin will also compete in the Furniture City Classic on August 31 at the Mines Golf Club in Grand Rapids with Davenport serving as host. Other non-conference competition includes the Olivet Invitational September 6 and 7 in Marshall and the North Central College Classic in Naperville September 10.
The final two rounds of the MIAA fall season consist of the two-day 36-hole MIAA Fall Tournament. The competition will again be held at the Bedford Valley Country Club in Battle Creek and is scheduled for October 11 and 12.
“It’s a challenging schedule and a good schedule,” said Bergsma. “Our golfers will need to come ready to compete right from the get-go but that is the way we like it.”
