Saturday, August 14, 2010
With only one returning letterwinner, the 2010 Calvin women’s golf team will feature a new look this fall. Gone are graduated seniors Emily Tuuk, Kelli Visser, Julienne Louters and Rachel Strikwerda. In are five welcome newcomers to the roster.
According to head coach Jerry Bergsma, the newcomers will bring enthusiasm and passion to the team.
“After graduating four seniors, there’s no doubt that this year will be a year of transition,” said Bergsma. “At the same time, I firmly believe that this will be a year of potential and new opportunity.”
Calvin’s lone returning letterwinner is sophomore Elise Doezema (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) who is looking to build on a superb freshman campaign that saw her average 96.0 strokes per round. Also a member of Calvin’s 2010 MIAA championship women’s tennis team, Doezema had four sub-100 rounds in league play as a first-year player as well as a season-best score of 86 that helped Calvin win the Alma Invitational in late September.
Newcomers to the team include sophomore Allison DeKock (Holland/Holland Christian HS) and freshmen Carlia Canto (Marysville, MI/Port Huron Northern HS), Taylor McClaskie (Hilliard, OH/Hillard Darby HS), Melissa Shepard (Lowell, MI/Lowell HS) and Ashley Tiefenthal (Manistee, MI/Manistee HS).
All five newcomers have high school experience while Canto and McClaskie have been active in junior summer golf tours. Canto recently competed at the Michigan Amateur Women’s Golf Championship in St. Clair.
“There are a number of questions with our lineup that won’t be answered until we go through the preseason and our first few events but I am confident those questions will be answered in a positive manner,” said Bergsma. “The players on this year’s team bring passion and commitment to the game of golf and the enthusiasm for the team is high. I am eagerly looking forward to the upcoming year.”
Calvin will open its season on September 1 when it goes head-to-head against Aquinas College in a dual match at Scott Lake Golf Club. Calvin will also compete at the Hope Invitational on September 7 and the Olivet Invitational September 24 and 25. Conference play begins on September 11 when the first MIAA jamboree takes place. The league jamboree on September 11 will be hosted by Alma at the Pine River Country Club and will be the first of four league jamborees.
Calvin will host the second MIAA jamboree - scheduled for September 14 at the Thornapple Pointe Golf Club. In addition, Olivet will host a jamboree on September 29 and Adrian a jamboree on October 2.
The 36-hole MIAA Tournament is scheduled for October 8 and 9 at the Bedford Valley Country Club. The tournament scores will also count on the final season stroke total for all nine league schools, contributing to the final MIAA regular season title.
