The 2010 Calvin men’s golf team returns six letterwinners from its 2009 squad that tied for second in the final MIAA standings.
Calvin’s senior cast includes Jess Hendriksma and Eric Doezema. Hendriksma (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) was a second team All-MIAA selection in 2009, finishing 10th in the final MIAA individual standings with an average of 75.9 strokes per round. As a sophomore in 2008, Hendriksma tied for 13th in the league standings with an average of 78.0 strokes per MIAA outing and in 2007, he finished tied for 18th (80.3). Hendriksma’s average last fall matched the second-best single-season MIAA scoring average in Calvin men’s golf history while his average in 2008 (78.0) also ranks in Calvin’s all-time top 10.
Doezema (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) is another savvy veteran who finished the 2009 MIAA season inside of Calvin’s regular lineup. As a freshman in 2007, he was 14th in the final MIAA standings with an average of 78.8 strokes per round. In 2008, he averaged 80.0 strokes per round. Last fall, he was in Calvin’s regular lineup in the first league outing and then was outside the top five until the fourth league outing of the year when he fired a score of 77 at the Milham Park Golf Club. He later carded a score of 75 at a league outing hosted by Calvin on October 5 that left him tied for seventh place individually.
The lone returning letterwinner in the junior class is Jake DeBoer (Byron Center/South Christian HS) who was in and out of Calvin’s top five last fall. An early season highlight for DeBoer came at the season-opening Lou Collins Classic where he fired a 36-hole total of 151 strokes (76-75). He also carded a 79 at the first MIAA outing of the year. During the spring season, he tied for 20th at the Muskingum College Invitational (81-76=157) then tied for 12th at the Trine University Bill Gettig Invitational with a score of 77. At the Spring Arbor Invitational, he had a two day total of 154 strokes (78-76) which helped Calvin finish in third place as a team. He also tied for 12th at the Furniture City Classic with scores of 78 and 75.
Returning letterwinners in the sophomore class include Dave Sarkipato (Kalamazoo/Kalamazoo Christian HS), Ben Kuiper (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) and Mike Fennema (Grand Rapids/South Christian HS).
Sarkipato and Kuiper were both part of Calvin’s starting lineup last fall with Sarkipato finishing 14th in the final league standings with an average of 77.1 strokes per round while Kuiper had an average of 79.1 strokes per round. Sarkipato had seven sub-80 rounds including a score of 76 that left him in sixth place at the third MIAA outing. Kuiper made an early splash last fall, placing fifth individually at the second league outing with a score of 75. He also tied with Sarkipato for 10th place at the sixth league outing with a score of 76. At the Muskingum Spring Invitational, he tied for fifth individually with rounds of 79 and 69 (148) and had a team-best 36-hole total of 151 strokes (76-75) at the Spring Arbor Invitational that was good for fifth place individually.
Fennema was a member of the 2009-10 MIAA Academic Honor Roll for maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 3.50 or above during the academic year. At the Furniture City Classic last spring, Fennema was 34th individually. He was also 51st at the Muskingum Invitational
Head coach Brian Bolt also welcomes a strong incoming freshmen class with several individuals expected to compete for spots in Calvin’s starting lineup.
