Dan Gelderloos Preseason Audio Interview

The Calvin women’s swimming and diving team will be seeking its seventh straight MIAA title this winter. The Knights have won nine of the last 11 MIAA crowns.

The Knights return 18 letterwinners including three that earned All-MIAA honors in 2010. Returning All-MIAA selections include senior Monica Bressler (Sandusky, OH/Perkins HS), junior Rachel Bos (Hudsonville, MI/Unity Christian HS) and sophomore Elizabeth Counsel (Indianapolis, IN/Heritage Christian HS).

Bressler is a two-time All-MIAA selection and was a three-time MIAA event champion last February, winning the 100 backstroke, 50 freestyle and 200 backstroke. She also qualified for the NCAA III Championships in the 100 and 200 backstroke events and in several relays.

She was also a national qualifier for the 2009 NCAA III Championships and picked up All-America honors twice as she was a member of Calvin’s eighth place 200 freestyle and 400 medley relay teams. She has also been a member of three honorable mention All-America relay teams at Calvin, placing 10th in the 200 medley relay at the 2009 national meet and 12th in 200 medley relay and 16th in the 400 medley relay at the 2010 national meet. Last spring, Bressler was named a third team ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American.

Bos is a freestyle sprints specialist. At the 2010 MIAA Championships, she was third in the 100 freestyle, fourth in the 50 freestyle and fifth in the 100 butterfly. Counsell was a big point producer for Calvin at the MIAA Championships, placing third in the 100 breaststroke, 200 breaststroke and ninth in the 200 IM. She later earned honorable mention All-America accolades in the 200 breaststroke, finishing 11th at the 2010 NCAA III Championships.

Other returning letterwinners include seniors Caitlin Alexander (Holland, MI/Holland Christian HS), Carmen Brummel (West Olivet, MI/Unity Christian HS), Marrian Cardwell (Wheaton, IL/Wheaton North HS), Kendra Kinzer (Fort Wayne, IN/Homestead HS) and Brianna Vanden Ende (Huntsville, ON/Huntsville HS); juniors Elena Chong (Gotha, FL/Olympia HS), Gillian Morris (Windsor, ON/Maranatha Christian HS), Bridget Scott (Oaksville, ON/Kings Christian Collegiate HS) and Briana Seaks (East Lansing, MI/Okemos HS) and sophomores Shelby Cloyd (Kalamazoo, MI/Plainwell HS), Rachel Colasurdo (Chesepeake, VA/Home Schooled), Stephanie Fox (Kentwood, MI/Home Schooled), Samantha Klaasen (Holland/Holland Christian HS) and Savannah Van Wormer (Marshall, MI/Marshall HS).

Alexander has NCAA III Championships experience as she was part of Calvin’s (12th place) 200 medley relay and (16th place) 400 medley relay teams that earned honorable mention All-America honors at the 2010 NCAA III Championships. She was also a big point producer at the 2010 MIAA Championships, finishing fourth in the 100 butterfly, fourth in the 200 backstroke and sixth in the 100 backstroke.

A distance freestyle specialist, Kinzer was also a big point producer for Calvin at the 2010 conference meet, placing third in the 200 freestyle and seventh in the 500 freestyle. Colasurdo will also look to build off a big freshman campaign. She was third in the 400 IM, fourth in the 200 IM and eighth in the 100 freestyle at the conference meet last February.

Other returning swimmers who earned top eight finishes at the 2010 MIAA Championships include Cloyd (7th place, 1650 freestyle), Fox (7th place, 200 free) and Vanden Ende (7th place, 100 backstroke).

Calvin’s diving contingent should again be a strength as Brummel and Klaasen return with freshmen Elise Kauffman (Sugar Land, TX/Clements HS), Morgan Smith (Lawton, MI/Lawton HS) and Shaylin Laure (Vicksburg, MI/Vicksburg HS) joinging the divers.

Klaasen and Brummel both had NCAA III qualifying scores last year. At the MIAA Championships, Klaasen finished third on the one-meter board and fourth on the three-meter while Brummel was fifth on the three-meter board and seventh on the one-meter.

The freshman class includes 10 athletes and includes Kaufman, Smith, Laure, Breanne DeKryger (Grand Rapids, MI/Calvin Christian HS), Samantha Musolf (Byron Center, MI/Byron Center), Ellie Price (Hilton, NY/Hilton), Maraget Rechel (Worthington, OH/Thomas Worthington), Elizabeth Schleh (Mount Vernon, WA/Academy Northwest), Maria Sedjo (West Chicago, IL/Home Schooled) and Claire Strunk (Evanston, IL/Evanston Township).

Calvin will open its season by hosting the MIAA Relays October 23 at the Venema Aquatic Center. The Knights will also host their own Calvin Winter Invitational December 2-4. In addition, the Knights will compete at the University of Chicago Classic January 14 and 15. The Knights have non-conference dual meets against Grand Valley State (October 29/home), Wheaton (November 6/away) and Wayne State (November 12/away). Calvin MIAA dual meet schedule will find Calvin traveling to Alma on October 30, hosting Hope on November 13, traveling to Saint Mary’s (January 21), hosting Kalamazoo on January 22, traveling to Albion on January 29 and visiting Olivet February 5. A year ago, Calvin posted a 3-2 dual meet record against MIAA foes.

The MIAA Championships will be held at nearby Jenison High School February 17-19. The NCAA III Championships will take place March 23-26 at the University of Tennessee.
