Dan Gelderloos Preseason Audio Interview

The Calvin men’s swimming and diving team continues to build momentum. Under the direction of head coach Dan Gelderloos, the Knights will feature a roster of 21 athletes this year including three divers. A year ago, Calvin finished fourth in the final MIAA standings, placing fourth at the MIAA Championships with 428 points, 65 points behind third place Olivet.

The Knights return 11 letterwinners led by sophomore Mark Rushlow (Goshen, IN/Northridge HS). Rushlow was an All-MIAA selection as a freshman last year and also qualified for the NCAA III Championships in the 100 butterfly. Rushlow had a standout MIAA Championship meet, placing third in the 100 butterfly, fourth in the 100 freestyle and ninth in the 50 freestyle.

Other returning letterwinners include juniors Ross Battoclette (Cincinnati, OH/Clark Montessori HS), Greg Gorham (Minneapolis, MN/Ritchfield HS), Chris Shepperly (East Leroy, MI/Harper Creek HS), Trent Stensrud (Eden Prairie, MN/Minnetonka HS) and Luke Griffioen (Williamburg, VA/Jamestown HS) and sophomores Sam Allison (Dimondale, MI/Lansing Waverly HS), Mathias Bares (Holland/West Ottawa HS), Kenton Cooper (Galesburg, IL/Galesburg HS), Devin Heitz (Brockport, NY/Brockport HS) and Stephen Kraft (Warsaw, IN/Home Schooled).

Battoclette is a talented freestyle and backstroke specialist. At the MIAA Championships last winter, he finished eighth in the 500 freestyle, eighth in the 200 backstroke and 10th in the 200 freestyle.

Kraft had a pair of top-eight finishes at the MIAA Championships last February, placing seventh in the 400 IM and seventh in the 200 breaststroke. Gorham established a Calvin record in the 100 breaststroke at the MIAA Championships, clocking in with a time of 59.05.

Bares is a distance specialist who recorded a seventh place finish in the 1650 freestyle at the MIAA Championships while also placing 10th in the 500 freestyle.

The freshman class has 10 members and includes Adam Alexander (Holland/Holland Christian HS), Jeff Brown (Allison Park, PA/Hampton HS), David Doud (Marshall, MI/Marshall HS), Casey Harless (DeWitt, MI/DeWitt HS), Peter Johnson (Oak Forest, IL/Home Schooled), Andrew Krafft (Fort Wayne, IN/Home Schooled), Min Lim (Seoul, South Korea/Unity Christian HS), Andrew Mitchell (Ioran Mountain, MI/Kingsford HS), Jon Ptashnik (New Baltimore, MI/Anchor Bay HS) and Patric Russell (Bridgman, MI/Bridgman HS).

Brown, Andrew Krafft and Lim will fill out Calvin’s diving contingent.

Calvin will open its season by hosting the MIAA Relays October 23 at the Venema Aquatic Center. The Knights will also host their own Calvin Winter Invitational December 2-4. In addition, the Knights will compete at the University of Chicago Classic January 14 and 15. The Knights have non-conference dual meets against Grand Valley State (October 29/home), Wheaton (November 6/away) and Wayne State (November 12/away). Calvin MIAA dual meet schedule will find Calvin traveling to Alma on October 30, hosting Hope on November 13, hosting Kalamazoo on January 22, traveling to Albion on January 29 and visiting Olivet February 5. A year ago, Calvin posted a 3-2 dual meet record against MIAA foes.

The MIAA Championships will be held at nearby Jenison High School February 17-19. The NCAA III Championships will take place March 23-26 at the University of Tennessee.
