Monday, November 02, 2009
The 2009-10 Calvin menís swimming and diving team enters the upcoming year with a sense of optimism as the Knights have a roster of 20 swimmers and four divers. A year ago, Calvin took fourth place in the final league standings with a fourth place team score of 335 points at the MIAA Championships.
Of the 24 members of the team 20 are either freshmen or sophomores, leaving bright hope for the future.
Calvinís returning veterans include seniors Kurt VanAllsburg (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS), Brad Groenewold (Villa Park, IL/Timothy Christian HS) and Jon Herrema (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) and junior Tyler Westman (Naperville, IL/Naperville North HS). VanAllsburg is a backstroke and freestyle specialist who grabbed a seventh place finish in the 100 backstroke at the 2008 MIAA Championships and was also 12th in the 100 freestyle and 11th in the 50 freestyle. Groenewold is a solid distance freestyler who earned points at the 2008 MIAA Championships with a 16th place finish in the 1,650 freestyle. Herrema provides leadership in the butterfly and backstroke events. Herrema placed 16th in the 200 backstroke and 11th in the 100 butterfly at the 2008 MIAA Championships. Westman competes in the backstroke and IM events and placed 10th in the 100 backstroke and 14th in the 200 backstroke at the 2008 conference meet.
Calvinís top returning point producer from the 2008 MIAA Championship meet is sophomore Ross Battoclette (Cincinnati, OH/Clark Montessori HS) who placed seventh in the 200 backstroke, seventh in the 200 freestyle and 10th in the 500 freestyle. Battoclette is part of a talented sophomore class that includes Greg Gorham (Minneapolis, MN/Richfield HS), Luke Griffioen (Williamsburg, VA/Jamestown HS), Anthony Julius (Grand Rapids/Forest Hills Northern HS), Chris Shepperly (East Leroy/Harper Creek HS), Trent Stensrud (Eden Prairie, MN/Minnetonka HS) and Ethan Tatum (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS).
Shepperly placed 13th in the 100 backstroke and 10th in the 200 backstroke at the 2008 MIAA Championships. Tatum meanwhile was eighth in the 200 freestyle 11th in the 100 freestyle and 12th in the 500 freestyle, Griffioen was 15th in the 400 IM and 15th in the 200 butterfly while Julius was 16th in the 100 butterfly.
Calvinís four divers are all freshmen. Those divers are freshmen Marcus Ackerman (Holland/Holland Christian HS), Evan Bronson (Kalamazoo/Hackett Catholic Central HS), Colin Reynolds (Baltimore, MD/Dulaney HS) and Mark Rushlow (Goshen, IN/Northridge HS).
Not lost in the shuffle is the fact that Calvin will train and compete for a full year inside the sparkling Venema Aquatic Center which Calvin moved into in late January last winter. The Venema Aquatic Center will be home to eight competitions for the Knights during the 2009-10 season including the first-ever Calvin Winter Invitational December 3-5 and the MIAA Championships February 11-13.
