Consistency and improvement will be goals of the Calvin men’s golf team this fall. A year ago, the Knights slipped to sixth place in the MIAA standings after finishing fifth in 2006, 2005 and 2004. Finding a consistent lineup was the biggest challenge for head coach Brian Bolt as the Knights fielded seven different lineups during the 2007 MIAA season.

Calvin’s top returning golfer from 2007 is sophomore Eric Doezema (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) who finished 14th in the final MIAA standings with a season average of 78.6 strokes per round. Doezema had three sub-80 rounds during the 2007 league campaign including a round of 71 in the season finale, held at the Zollner Golf Course at Tri-State. Also returning is sophomore Jess Hendriksma (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) who finished tied for 19th in the MIAA standings with a season average of 80.3 strokes-per-round. Hendriksma opened the year with a round of 79 and closed it with a round of 75. Also finishing in the top 25 in 2007 is returning junior Jon Kuiper (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) who posted a season average of 81.4 strokes per outing.

Other returning letter winners include juniors Aaron Hargett (Lake Odessa/Lakewood HS), Kyle Harvey (Willard, OH/Willard HS), Tyler Smies (Sheboygan, Wisc/Sheboygan County Christian HS) and David Moes (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) and sophomores Matt Marks (Byron Center, Mich./South Christian HS) and Brock Caissie (Charlottetown PEI/Charlottetown HS).

Tindall, Harggett, Harvey, Smies and Marks all spent time in Calvin’s top five in 2007 but did not play the necessary rounds to finish in the final league standings.

In a pair of late spring outings, Calvin’s lineup included Doezema, Kuiper, Hendriksma, Smies, Marks and Harvey.

Calvin will open its season at the traditional Olivet College Lou Collins Classic Labor Day weekend. Calvin’s conference campaign will begin on September 6 with Alma hosting the first MIAA outing of the year. Calvin will host the seventh MIAA outing of the year on October 6 at the Watermark Country Club.

Calvin will also compete at the prestigious Red Poling Classic at the Dearborn TPC course on September 30.
