Christiansen and Koster Garner All-America Honors in 10K at NCAA III Track and Field Championships

MARIETTA, OH—Battling temperatures in the mid-80’s Calvin distance runners Jed Christiansen and Jessica Koster still found a way to run to All-America finishes in the 10,000 meters on day one of the NCAA III Track and Field Championships hosted by Marietta College. In the men’s race, Christiansen finished fourth with a time of 30:59.33 while Koster took fifth with a time of 36:11.75.

Van Woerkom, Oosterhouse & Deur Receive ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District IV Honors

ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District Teams

GRAND RAPIDS—Three Calvin student-athletes have received ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District honors in the women’s at-large college division.  Senior Cara Van Woerkom and sophomore Melissa Oosterhouse have been named to the all-district first team while senior Erica Deur has been named to the all-district second team.

As members of the first team, Van Woerkom and Oosterhouse now advance to the national ballot and are eligible for ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America ® consideration.

Tyler Berger Named To All-Mideast Region Baseball Team

Calvin College freshman Tyler Berger has been named to the Division III All-Mideast Region third team by the American Baseball Coaches Association.

A native of Grand Rapids and a graduate of Grand Rapids Christian High School, Berger took over the starting job in centerfield this spring for the Knights and batted a team-leading .400 with 31 runs scored and 31 runs batted in. He also belted four home runs, 10 doubles and two triples for a slugging percentage of .626. In the field, Berger was stellar, committing just two errors in 72 chances for a fielding percentage of .971.

Nate DeHaan Prepares For NCAA III Championships in 3,000 Meter Steeplechase

This weekend, Calvin College senior Nate DeHaan will compete in the 3,000 meter steeplechase at the NCAA III Outdoor Track and Field Championships. DeHaan is seeded eighth with a time of 9:08.26 and will join teammate Aaron Goodman in the race. A year ago, DeHaan finished 12th in the steeplechase at the national meet, despite losing a shoe in the opening lap. Calvin Announces Recipients of Bere’/Tiemersma Awards

GRAND RAPIDS, Michigan—Calvin College has announced the 2009 recipients of its highest honors for men’s and women’s athletics:  the Beré Memorial Award and the Kay Tiemersma Athletic Award.

Jed Christiansen of Greenville, Pennsylvania, is this year’s Beré Memorial Award winner while Erica Deur is this year’s recipient of the Tiemersma Award. Christiansen has been a four-year standout on the Calvin men’s cross country team and on its men’s track and field team. Deur has a been a diving standout on the Calvin women’s swimming and diving team the past four years.

Sarah Reasoner Named Regional Field Athlete of the Year by USTFCCA

Calvin College sophomore Sarah Reasoner has been named the Division III Great Lakes Regional Field Event Athlete of the Year by the United States Track and Field Cross Country Coaches Association.

A sophomore from Cambridge, Minn., Reasoner won MIAA titles in both the shot put and the discus to help lead Calvin to its 20th straight outdoor team title, also earning MIAA Most Outstanding Field Event Performer honors for her efforts.

The Calvin men’s and women’s track and field teams will send a combined 15 athletes to the upcoming NCAA III Track and Field Championships including 10 from its women’s team and five from its men’s team.

The following is a look at the 15 individuals that will represent the Calvin track and field program at the NCAA III Track and Field Championships this Thursday, Friday and Saturday (May 21-23) at Marietta College in Marietta, Ohio.

Calvin Track and Field Athletes Compete at Last-Chance Meet Hosted by North Central

NAPERVILLE, IL—A group of Calvin track and field athletes competed at the North Central Gregory Invitational Thursday and Friday night, hoping to improve season performances and in some instances, qualifiy for next week’s NCAA III Track and Field Championships.

One athlete who gave himself a chance at qualifying was Calvin sophomore Eric Michel (Naperville, IL) in the pole vault as he recorded a career-best vault of 15-9 3/4 that places him on the bubble on the national qualifying list. Michel’s vault was an NCAA III provisional qualifying mark and puts him 15th place on the national list.

Calvin Second in Final MIAA Commissioner’s Cup Standings

The final MIAA Commissioner’s Cup Standings have been released and Calvin has finished second behind Hope in all three categories. In the MIAA (overall) Commissioner’s Cup Standings, Calvin finished with 197 points with Hope first with 208 points. In the men’s all-sports standings, Calvin finished one point behind Hope with 93 points. In the women’s all-sports standings, Calvin finished second with 104 points with Hope winning with 114 points.

Sietsema & Pocock Receive MIAA Player of the Week Honors

Two members of the Calvin baseball team have received MIAA Player of the Week honors.

Junior Ben Sietsema has been named MIAA Co-Pitcher of the Week along with Adrian’s Ryan Domschot. It marks the third time that Sietsema has received MIAA Pitcher of the Week accolades this spring. In addition, senior Nate Pocock has been named MIAA Player of the Week.
