MIAA Jamboree Results

WEST OLIVE - The Calvin men’s golf team finished in a three-way tie for second place in the final MIAA standings, posting a team score of 309 on Wednesday at the final MIAA Jamboree of the year. Hope hosted the MIAA Jamboree at the Wuskowhan Players Club. Albion took first place on Wednesday with a sizzling score of 291 to make up 18 strokes on Calvin while Trine fired a round of 297 to also catch the Knights and create a three-way tie for second place. Calvin finished the year with a season average of 305.0 strokes-per-round, establishing a new Calvin single-season record. It also marks Calvin’s first second place finish since the 2003 season.

Calvin was led by senior Jon Kuiper with a round of 73 that left him with a final season average of 74.0 strokes-per-round which was good for second place in the final MIAA individual standings. The average breaks the previous Calvin record of 75.9 set by Jeff TenBrink in 2005.  It is also Calvin’s highest individual MIAA finish since Phil Rietema was second in 2003.

HOLLAND—Last second goals are always the hardest to bear, especially in a match-up that features two such rivals as Calvin and Hope.  And this is what the Knights had to do Tuesday night as they suffered a heartbreaking 1-0 loss to the Dutchmen in a double-overtime thriller.

In the first ever Calvin-Hope game held at Hope’s brand new Van Andel Soccer Stadium there was a good turnout from both sides of the rivalry with many alumni, parents, and students coming out and enduring the cold to cheer their teams on to victory under the bright lights.

Box Score

Slated with the second game of a soccer double-header, the men again came out strong on what could be called a cold and blustery Saturday afternoon, defeating the Trine Thunder by a score of 2-0.

After a somewhat frustrating win against Kalamazoo this past Wednesday, a game in which the Knights were struggling to finish for goals, Saturday’s contest looked early on to be of the same nature.  The Knights out-shot the Thunder 29-4 with a 12-1 shots-on-goal differential.  In the first half, no goals were scored.

The win also boosted Calvin into sole possession of first place in the MIAA standings as Hope was defeated by Olivet 1-0 on Saturday, giving Calvin a three-point lead over Hope heading into a Tuesday showdown in Holland.
