After losing the previous match-up at the DeVos Fieldhouse in three sets, the Knights volleyball squad set out to turn the tables against the fifth ranked Flying Dutch of Hope College.  In that attempt, Calvin had a record crowd behind them, setting an NCAA III regular season single match attendance record inside of Calvin’s Van Noord Arena.  Calvin’s bid for a share of the league lead in the MIAA standings came up short on Wednesday night however as the Knights dropped a five-set match to Hope 25-22, 22-25, 25-27, 25-12, 15-6.

Karla Wolters Honorary Knight Announcement

(editors note: members of the 1986 National runner-up Calvin volleyball team including head coach Karla Wolters reunite this evening and were recognized in between sets two and three).

By Calvin Sports Information Director Jeff Febus

Topping a 37-4 season is no easy task for any volleyball team but the 1986 Calvin women’s volleyball team did just that and then some. In 1986, the Knights under the direction of head coach Karla Wolters put together a season like no other team in Calvin or MIAA history before, ripping off a 38-2 campaign that did not end until a heartbreaking five-game loss to the University of California at San Diego in the National Finals. The 38 win total is still a high water mark for any MIAA volleyball team as is the national runner-up finish.

On a damp, gray day at Zuidema field, the Knights prevailed over Olivet 2-0 to remain atop the MIAA.

The Knights entered the game ranked 18th in the D3soccer.com poll and 21st in the National Soccer Coaches Division III poll.

In the 50th minute, Brad Heethuis received a Dan Kmetz cross at the top of the eighteen and buried a shot into the bottom left corner of the net, putting Calvin on top 1-0.  The goal came after a first half in which each team generated a few chances but couldn’t break the last line of defense and get on the board.
