Men’s Basketball Defeats Adrian to Set Up Saturday Showdown at Hope

ADRIAN—With a share of first place on the line in the MIAA standings, Calvin rose to the occasion with an 87-56 victory over the host Adrian Bulldogs Wednesday night. The Calvin victory sets up a first place showdown on Saturday at Hope as the two storied rivals both head into the contest at 3-0 in league play, one game ahead of 2-1 Adrian.

Hope used a quick start and stifling defense to cruise past Calvin 73-49 Wednesday night at DeVos Fieldhouse. The Flying Dutch, ranked ninth in the latest d3hoops.com poll, held the Knights’ starters to eight points and forced 32 turnovers to notch their fourth straight win over Calvin.
WBBL’s On the Bench Visits Van Noord Arena

The Van Noord Arena hosted its first men’s and women’s varsity basketball games on January 7 against Trine University. Earlier in the day before the games, local Grand Rapids all-sports radio station
WBBL 1340 AM was there as WBBL sports director Bret Bakita hosted his morning “On the Bench” program live from the Van Noord Arena. During the program, Bakita interviewed Calvin men’s basketball coach Kevin Vande Streek, Calvin women’s basketball coach John Ross, Calvin men’s athletics director Dr. Jim Timmer Jr. and Mike Zwier and Sarah Partridge of the Calvin men’s and women’s basketball team respectively.

Calvin was able to knock off Alma 73-47 without leading scorer John Mantel Saturday afternoon at VanNoord Arena. After matching his career high of 27 points in Wednesday’s inaugural game, Mantel was sidelined with an ankle injury just 24 seconds into the game.

GRAND RAPIDS – John Mantel made sure Trine didn’t spoil Calvin’s unveiling of the new Van Noord Arena.
The junior center matched a career-high 27 points and reeled in 11 rebounds to bolster the Knights in their 77-69 win over the Thunder in the conference opener on Wednesday, capping a milestone night that included a victory for the women’s team beforehand and the presentation of the MIAA Commissioner’s Cup at halftime.

GRAND RAPIDS – Nomads for nearly the first two months of the regular season, the Knights returned to a brand new Van Noord Arena for their first home game since last March. And they just didn’t want it to end.
Calvin outlasted Trine in a double-overtime thriller on Wednesday, rallying from late deficits in each of the extra frames in order to snap a three-game conference losing skid against the visiting Thunder, 71-65.

ALMA—The Calvin women’s basketball team dipped to 6-5 overall and to 1-3 in the MIAA with a 58-54 overtime loss at Alma on Saturday’s - Calvin’s first defeat against the Scots since the 2003 season.
Keys to Spoelhof Fieldhouse Complex Given to Calvin College

The keys to the Spoelhof Fieldhouse Complex were given to Calvin College Friday afternoon. Calvin president Dr. Gaylen Byker was there to accept the keys from Christman Construction Company Senior Vice President Jim Cash. Members of the media and groups of individuals from the Calvin community were in attendance for the event. In addition, the men’s and women’s basketball teams had their first practices inside the VanNoord Arena on Friday.
