Calvin Basketball Players Receive MIAA Player of the Week Honors

Calvin College juniors John Mantel and Brook Van Eck have received MIAA Player of the Week honors. Mantel has been named MIAA Player of the Week in men’s basketball for the third time this year while Van Eck has been named MIAA Player of the Week in women’s basketball for the second time this season.

Return By Harris Sparks Women’s Basketball Team To Win at Adrian

ADRIAN – After two turnovers and one errant put-back on her first three possessions, it certainly looked like Marcia Harris hadn’t played since 2008.

But following the fourth, fifth and sixth trips down the floor, Calvin’s second all-time leading scorer was back.

Harris pumped in a game-high 28 points in her first game since December and led the Knights to their second straight pivotal win, an 88-81 decision over Adrian.

NCAA’s Double-a-Zone Staff Visits Calvin

Howard Smith and Ryan Powell of the NCAA visited the Spoelhof Fieldhouse Complex on Saturday. Representing the NCAA Double-a Zone blog, Smith and Powell took in part of Calvin’s swimming and diving meet with Kalamazoo on Saturday. The visit was part of a weekend tour through the state of Michigan entitled: The Michigan Sports Extravaganza.

Swimming and Diving Teams Split With Kalamazoo

GRAND RAPIDS – The Calvin men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams held their second-ever dual meets inside the Venema Aquatic Center on Saturday and came away with a split against Kalamazoo. On the women’s side, Calvin defeated Kalamazoo 195-100. On the men’s side, Kalamazoo defeated Calvin 177-97.

Calvin held the MIAA’s second leading scorer, Adrian’s Desmond Young, scoreless as the Knights survived a defensive slugfest with Adrian 63-59 Saturday at VanNoord Arena to hold on to first place in the MIAA.

vin College senior Marcia Harris has received ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District honors in women’s basketball. A native of Grand Rapids and a graduate of Grand Rapids Christian High School, Harris has been named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District IV third team in the college division.

Women’s Basketball Finishes Strong To Defeat Albion

The Calvin women’s basketball team defeated Albion 76-68 on Wednesday night inside the Van Noord Arena. Junior Brook Van Eck scored 26 points while freshman Courtney Kurncz had a career-high 17 points. Senior Kristi Brummel added 16 points on the strength of four three-point field goals.

Mens Basketball Takes Sole Possession of First Place in MIAA Standings With Win Over Alma

ALMA—The Calvin men’s basketball fought off an upset bid from the Alma Scots Wednesday night inside the Cappaert Gymnasium to move into sole possession of first place in the MIAA standings.

Calvin (13-6 overall) came from behind to defeat Alma 66-55 to improve to 8-1 in the MIAA, one game ahead of second place Hope which dropped to 7-2 in league play with a 70-68 loss at Albion on Wednesday.

TERRE HAUTE, IN—A group of Calvin men’s and women’s track and field athletes competed at the Rose-Hulman Engineer Invitational on Saturday with several athletes posting strong performances. A highlight for both Calvin teams was the performance of their distance medley squads.
