ANGOLA, IN—Calvin broke an 18-day layoff with a 58-40 victory at Trine University on Saturday afternoon. Ranked 13th nationally in the coaches’ poll and 20th in the latest d3hoops.com Top 25 poll, Calvin improves to 12-1 overall and to 4-0 in the MIAA. The Knights currently share first place in the MIAA standings with rival Hope.
Calvin jumped out to a 26-13 halftime lead and stretched its lead to as many as 26 points in the second half.

Looking to build off of a big win vs. rival Hope earlier this week, Calvin took on Olivet Saturday at VanNoord Arena January 10th. Calvin(7-6, 2-0MIAA) defeated Olivet(5-8, 0-2MIAA) 65-61. The victory lifts Calvin over the .500 mark for the first time this year and keeps the Knights in a share of first place in the MIAA standings.

The Calvin College men’s basketball team remains unbeaten in MIAA openers under head coach Kevin Vande Streek. The Knights are now 14-0 in MIAA openers under Vande Streek thanks to an 84-75 victory over rival Hope College Wednesday night in front of 4,468 fans at Calvin’s Van Noord Arena.
Wednesday’s game marked the first time Calvin and Hope had met in men’s basketball in an MIAA opener since 1988. It also marked the 174th meeting between the two storied rivals in a series that Hope still leads 88-86.

The 174th meeting between Calvin and Hope in menís basketball will take place on Wednesday, January 6, when the two rivals face each other inside Calvinís Van Noord Arena at 7:30 p.m.
Hope currently holds a slim 88-85 series lead in a series that began during the 1920-21 season. Just 101 points separate the teams over 173 games, a difference of only 0.583 points per game!
This will also feature the second meeting of the year between the two teams as Hope edged Calvin 79-76 in the consolation game of the Grand Rapids Sports Hall of Fame Tournament Thanksgiving weekend.

Calvin is partnering with Stretch Internet and will be streaming live video directly to its Web site from the Van Noord Arena in 2010.
The first video stream to be sent to the Calvin Web site will be the January 6, 2010, Calvin-Hope menís basketball varsity game. Calvin will stream the video and audio feed of the WGVU television broadcast for that game. Future home games in both men’s and women’s basketball as well as women’s volleyball will be a single-camera shot with house audio accompanying the video feed.

PHOENIX, AZ—Calvin’s three-game win streak came to an end on Wednesday afternoon as the Knights were defeated by Loras (IA) 78-61 on the third and final day of competition at the Grand Canyon Cactus Jam.
A rough first half effort proved to be Calvin’s undoing as the Knights (5-6) trailed 46-21 at halftime. Calvin connected on only five first half field goals while allowing Loras (6-6) to shoot 17 of 29 (.586) from the floor in the opening 20 minutes.

PHOENIX, AZ—The Calvin men’s basketball team picked up its first victory over Ohio Northern since the 1991-92 season and stretched its win streak to three games in the process with a 70-67 overtime victory over the Polar Bears Tuesday afternoon at the Grand Canyon Cactus Jam.
Heading into Tuesday’s game, Ohio Northern had won the last three meetings against Calvin, winning in 1993, 2001 and 2003 with the victories in 1993 and 2001 coming in NCAA III Tournament play. Calvin’s last victory over Ohio Northern had been a 65-50 decision on Thanksgiving weekend of Calvin’s 1991-92 national championship season.

PHOENIX, AZ—The Calvin men’s basketball team has put together back-to-back victories for the first time this season. The Knights did so in thrilling fashion with a 79-78 victory over Lewis and Clark College (OR) Monday night on the first day of competition at the Grand Canyon Cactus Jam. Monday’s game was the first for Calvin since an 86-59 victory over Trinity Christian College (IL) on December 18.
Calvin (4-5) led by as many as nine points in the first half but trailed 44-43 at halftime.

ROYAL OAK, Mich. Ė The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has named Calvin center Carissa Verkaik its Player of the Week in womenís basketball for games played through December 27.
Verkaik, a freshman from Holland (Holland Christian HS), scored 19 points and added 14 rebounds, four blocked shots and four assists as the Knights posted a 59-56 victory over Madonna. She has averaged 18.8 points and 11.3 rebounds per game, tops in the MIAA in both categories, in leading Calvin to an 11-1 start. Verkaik is being honored as Player of the Week for the second time this season.

The Calvin College men’s soccer team excelled on the field this fall, advancing all the way to the NCAA III Championship finals. Under the direction of head coach Chris Hughes, the Knights have also excelled in the classroom too.
The Calvin men’s soccer team was recently selected as a recipient of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America College Team Academic Award. To receive the honor, a team needed to post a cumulative team grade point average of 3.0 or above.
The Calvin men’s soccer team posted a 3.19 grade point average for the 2008-09 academic year. This marks the first time the Knights have received the NSCAA College Team Academic Award.« First < 213 214 215 216 217 > Last »
