Nicole Michmerhuizen Takes Second in 5K at NCAA III Indoor Track and Field Championships

LINCOLN, NE - Calvin College senior Nicole Michmerhuizen came up with one of the finest racing performances of her collegiate career Friday night ast the NCAA III Indoor Track and Field Championships at the University of Nebraska’s Bob DeVaney Sports Complex. The Holland Christian High School graduate took second place in the 5,000 meters with a career-best time of 16:41.26. Lenore Moreno of Luverne University (Ca.) won the race with an NCAA III record time of 16:32.85, breaking the previous NCAA III record by nearly four seconds. Michmerhuizen still has one race to run at the indoor national meet as she will compete in the 3,000 meters Saturday afternoon where she is seeded seventh. The finish by Michmerhuizen gives Calvin eight points in the overall team standings. It is also the third NCAA III All-America performance of her collegiate career. In addition to her back-to-back runner-up berths in the 5K indoors, she was also the 10,000 meter national champion at the 2013 NCAA III Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

Men’s Tennis Defeats St. Nobert 7-2 in Non-Conference Match

The Calvin men’s tennis team evened its season record at 1-1 with a 7-2 victory at St. Nobert College late Thursday night. Calvin got the ball rolling by winning two of the three doubles points. Senior John Strikwerda and sophomore Matt Buesing picked up an 8-3 win at No. 2 doubles while junior Tom Griffin and senior Stephen Healey picked up an 8-0 win at No. 3 doubles. At one singles, senior Loukas Peterson claimed a 6-3, 7-5 win while Griffin won at three singles 3-6, 6-4, 8-6. Buesing then won at four singles 6-3, 6-2, Strikwerda won at five singles 6-0, 6-3 and Healy won at six singles 6-0, 6-1. Calvin returns to action on Friday when it travels to Ripon College for a 4 p.m. match.

Baseball Series With Kalamazoo Will Begin Friday Night at Davenport University

A four-game conference series between Calvin and Kalamazoo has been altered because of weather conditions in West Michigan. The series is now scheduled to begin with a doubleheader at Davenport’s Farmer’s Athletic Complex at 7 p.m. on Friday. A subsequent doubleheader was also set for Saturday at Davenport but has now been postponed as the field is not available that day. A makeup date has still not been officially set.

Nicole Michmerhuizen Named Recipient of Prestigious NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship

2013-14 NCAA Postgraduate Scholar Award Recipients

Calvin College senior Nicole Michmerhuizen has added yet another lofty honor to her long list of prestigious accomplishments as a student-athlete. Michmerhuizen was recently named one of the 58 fall sports recipients of an NCAA Postgraduate scholarship. The scholarships were awarded across all three NCAA divisions. A native of Holland and a graduate of Holland Christian High School, Michmerhuizen will receive a one-time, non-renewable scholarship grant of $7,500.00. Michmerhuizen recently decided to attend the University of Michigan to pursue a Ph.D in pharmacology. While in Ann Arbor, she plans to pursue research in biomedical sciences. Michmerhuizen is the ninth NCAA Postgraduate Scholar from Calvin and the first since Missy Smith was so honored in 2006. She is scheduled to compete at the NCAA III Indoor Track and Field Championships this weekend in the 5,000 meter and 3,000 meter runs.

For the second consecutive year, Nicole Michmerhuizen will represent the Calvin track and field program at the NCAA III Indoor Track and Field Championships. A senior out of Holland Christian High School, Michmerhuizen will compete in the women’s 3,000 and 5,000 meter runs. The 3,000 meter competition is a new event at this year’s national championship meet. A year ago, Michmerhuizen took second in the 5,000 meters at the national indoor meet at North Central College. She is seeded seventh in the 3,000 meters (9:45.67) and fifth in the 5,000 meters (17:01.38). The 5,000 meters will take place on Friday evening at 5:50 p.m. (central time) while the 3,000 meters is scheduled to take place at 4:40 p.m. (central time) on Saturday afternoon. The meet will take place place in Lincoln, Nebraska. Nebraska Wesleyan University will serve as the host of the meet. The meet will actually take place at the University of Nebraska’s Bob Devaney Sports Center.

Calvin Men’s Basketball Headed to NCAA III Sectional Hosted by Illinois Wesleyan

The Calvin men’s basketball team is headed to an NCAA III Tournament sectional hosted by Illinois Wesleyan University in Bloomington, Illinois, March 14 and 15. The sixth-ranked Titans (25-4) will host a sectional that will also include Dickinson College (PA) and Wheaton College (IL). Dickinson (23-6) will face Wheaton (21-8) in the first sectional semifinal Friday night at 6:30 p.m. (EST) followed by a game between Calvin and Illinois Wesleyan at 8:30 p.m. (EDT). The sectional finals are scheduled to be held Saturday night at 8 p.m. (EDT). Calvin’s game against Illinois Wesleyan will mark its first-ever meeting against the Titans in men’s basketball. Calvin (24-5) advanced to the Round of 16 of the NCAA III by defeating Wittenberg 66-51 in the first round and second-ranked Washington University of St. Louis 83-75 in the second round. Calvin is making its second consecutive appearance in the Round of 16 of the NCAA III Tournament including its seventh in school history.
Tickets will be on sale beginning Tuesday morning at 9 a.m. at the Calvin Box Office inside the Calvin Covenant Fine Arts Center. Tickets will be $7.00 for adults and $4.00 for students.Tickets must be purchased in person at the box office.

Calvin Track and Field Athletes Compete at Last-Chance Indoor Meets

A small group of track and field athletes competed at last-chance indoor qualifying meets Friday and Saturday in Wisconsin.  On Friday, sophomore Eric Jipping (Canton/Plymouth Christian HS) highlighted the day by unleashing a career-best throw of 53-11 in the shot put at a meet hosted by Carthage College. The throw puts Jipping 17th on the NCAA III indoor nationa list and may put him just outside qualifying for next week’s indoor national meet. The throw was a career-best by nearly a foot-and-a-half however. On Saturday, senior David Vande Bunte (Byron Center/Byron Center HS) closed out his collegiate career with a fifth place time of 15:02.22 in the 5,000 meters at a meet hosted by UW-Stevens Point. Senior Philip Spitzer (Buckley HS) was 10th in 15:39.98. In the women’s, 5,000 meters, junior Paige McGahan (Brighton/Brighton HS) turned in a career-best time of 18:16.55 while junior Sarah Danner (Watkins Glen, NY/Charles Dickerson HS) had a time of 18:21.14.

Women’s Lacrosse Edged at Capital 11-8

BEXLEY, OH - Calvin fell behind early against the Capital University Crusaders and could never get over the hump as the Knights dropped an 11-8 decision Saturday afternoon. Calvin (1-2) fell behind 4-0 in the opening 13 minutes of the first half. Calvin freshman Emily Cefaratti (Hinsdale, IL/Hinsdale Central HS) scored on a free position shot to make the score 4-1 but the host Crusaders (2-0) countered with back-to-back goals to grab a 6-1 lead. Senior Michelle Holwerda (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) scored on a feed from freshman Audrey Grabowski (East Grand Rapids/East Grand Rapids HS) shortly before the first half ended to bring the Knights to within 6-2. Cefaratti had another big game with four goals, one assist and five points for Calvin in a losing cause. Sophomore Carolyn Forbes (Farmington Hills/Marian HS) added two goals while Holwerda had a goal and an assist and junior Karissa Reed (Greenville/Greenville HS) one goal. Senior goalie Lauren Spoelstra (Oakland, NJ/Eastern Christian HS) had six saves in defeat.Calvin picked up 26 ground balls to the 17 collected by Capital was able to score on 11 of its 26 shots while Calvin was just 8-for-26 shooting. Calvin is back in action next Wednesday when it travels to rival Hope for a non-conference game slated to start at 4 p.m.

Men’s Lacrosse Falls at Elmhurst 9-0

ELMHURST, IL - Calvin dipped to 1-3 on the year with a 9-0 loss at Elmhurst College Saturday afternoon. Elmhurst led 6-0 at halftime and then held off the Knights throughout the second half. Elmhurst held a commanding 39-12 shots at goal advantage. Calvin committed 34 turnovers in the loss and won just 4-of-13 faceoffs. Senior Casey Harless (DeWitt/DeWitt HS) had five saves in goal for the Knights. Calvin is back in action next Wednesday when it travels to rival Hope for a non-conference game slated to start at 7 p.m.

Men’s Basketball Advances to Round of 16 of NCAA III Tournament With Win Over #2 Wash. U.

ST. LOUIS, MO - Advancing to the second round of the NCAA Tournament with a win on Friday evening, the Calvin men’s basketball team faced a tall task in host Washington University of St. Louis, ranked #2 nationally and entering with a 24-2 record. Calvin proved up to the task however, handing the Bears an 83-75 defeat Saturday night to advance to the Round of 16 of the NCAA III Tournament for the second straight year. Calvin will face sixth-ranked Illinois Wesleyan next Friday night at a site to be announced later this weekend. Calvin received strong guard play throughout the game led by junior Jordan Brink who matched career highs in points and rebounds with 27 points an 11 boards. Austin Parks also had 18 points while Jordan Daley had 12.
