ROYAL OAK, Mich. – The Calvin baseball team has been picked to finish fourth in the MIAA preseason coaches’ poll while defending co-champion Adrian has been picked as the preseason favorite to win the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association baseball championship. Adrian received seven out of a possible eight first-place votes in the preseason poll of the league’s coaches. Coaches could not vote for their own team. Hope, which was picked to finish second, received the other first-place vote. Calvin returns several letterwinners from a team that finished fourth in the MIAA standings last year and gained its first-ever MIAA Tournament berth.

The 2014 MIAA Swimming and Diving Championships are set to take place this week inside Calvin’s Venema Aquatic Center beginning with the one-meter diving prelims competition as well as the 800 freestyle relay events Wednesday night at 7 p.m. Action will continue Thursday, Friday and Saturday with prelims set for 10 a.m. and finals set for 5:30 p.m. The Calvin Sports Information Office caught up with Calvin head swim coach Dan Gelderloos and to preview the upcoming championship meet. HILLSDALE - The Calvin men’s and women’s track and field team put together two strong days of competition at the Hillsdale “Wide-Track” Classic on Friday and Saturday. Junior Erik Holstege led the charge on the men’s side by posting a two-day point total of 4, 672 points. The total will put Holstege in contention for a spot in the event for the NCAA III Indoor Track and Field Championships next month. Holstege had the top shot put performance on the heptathlon competitors with a throw of 41-11 1/2 while also recording marks of 21-2 3/4 in the long jump and 5-11 1/2 in the high jump. He also ran 7.30 in the 60 meter dash, was eighth in the 1,000 meter run (3:03.46), second in the 60 meter hurdles (8.52) and 11th in the pole vault (10-8). In the men’s 3,000 meter invitational only race, senior David Vande Bunte took second with an impressive time of 8:33.54. In the open 3,000 meters, junior Steven Haagsma took second (8:47.79) while junior Josh Ferguson was third (8:49.02). In addition, sophomore Jeff Meitler won the men’s open one-mile run with a time of 4:25.30. Sophomore McKenzie Diemer won the women’s open 3,000 meters with a time of 10:33.59 while junior Sarah Danner was second (10:34.54). Freshman Cassie Vince took fifth in the invite only 3,000 meters in a time of 10:01.69. In the women’s open mile run, freshman Kristen Brink took third in a time of 5:47.83. Senior Hilary Banning also took third with an impressive leap of 35-11 in the triple jump.

ADRIAN - Calvin got back on the winning track Saturday night, defeating the Adrian Bulldogs 68-55. Calvin (16-5 overall, 8-2 MIAA) held a slim 34-33 halftime lead as Adrian shot 48 percent from the field over the opening 20 minutes. Calvin limited the Bulldogs to 29 percent shooting in the second half while shooting 53 percent on its own offensive end to pull away for the win. Junior guard Jordan Brink (Dyer, IN/Illiana Christian HS) was a key part of the Calvin second half surge, scoring 15 second half points. Junior forward Tyler Dykstra (Holland/Holland Christian HS) had 12 points and five boards while senior Tyler Kruis (Grand Rapids/Calvin Christian HS) had 11 points and five rebounds. Senior Mickey DeVries (Lansing/Lansing Christian HS) chipped in with eight points. Calvin is back in action on Wednesday when it hosts Kalamazoo at Van Noord Arena at 7:30 p.m.

ALMA - The Calvin women’s basketball team finished out a busy week of play with an 82-70 victory at Alma College Saturday afternoon. The game marked the fourth game in seven days for the Knights. With the win, Calvin moved within a half-game of second place Olivet (10-2 MIAA) as the Knights improved to 10-3 in league play and to 15-6 overall. Calvin led 39-28 at halftime holding Alma to 32.4 percent shooting in the first half. The Knights stretched their lead to as many as 21 points at 76-55 with just over six minutes remaining before the Scots made a late run to close the final deficit down to 12.

PONTIAC, Mich. - The Calvin men’s lacrosse team opened its 2014 campaign with a non-conference game against the Red Men of Carthage College Friday morning at the Pontiac Ultimate Soccer Arena. Calvin dropped Friday’s contest 23-1. Freshman Andrew Haan (Holland/Holland Christian HS) had the lone goal for the Knights. Calvin is back in action on February 22 when it travels to Benedictine (IL) for a 2 p.m. (EST) game.

Calvin improved to 14-6 overall and 9-3 in the MIAA with an 87-54 win over Saint Mary’s Wednesday evening inside Van Noord Arena. The Knights remain one game behind second place Olivet which improved to 10-2 with a win over Albion Wednesday. Calvin put together a superb first half in racing out to a 52-22 halftime lead. The Knights shot 61.1 percent from the field in the opening 20 minutes and connected on six three-pointers. Calvin’s full-court press also forced Saint Mary’s (6-14 overall, 4-7 MIAA) into committing 13 first half turnovers. Calvin never looked back from there in coasting to the win.

HOLLAND - Another rivalry game, another first place showdown. The Calvin men’s basketball team traveled to Holland and the DeVos Fieldhouse on Wednesday evening, looking to take sole possession of first place from rival Hope. In the first meeting this season between the two teams, Hope defeated Calvin 71-63 at the Van Noord Arena. Unfortunately for the Knights, it was the same on the road as it had been at home, and this in a more lopsided fashion. Calvin trailed by as many as 30 in the second half before falling at a final score of 83-65. Senior Tyler Kruis (Grand Rapids/Calvin Christian HS) scored a game-high 21 to lead the Knights in defeat. Junior Jordan Brink (Dyer, IN/Illiana Christian HS) added 11 points. With his 21 points, Kruis boosted his career total to 1,030, moving past Matt Veltema and into 19th place on the Calvin career list.

The Calvin men’s lacrosse season will kick off on Saturday when the Knights take on Carthage College at 11 a.m. in Pontiac, Michigan. Under the direction of head coach Joel Kamstra, the youthful Knights are in their second year as a varsity program. A year ago Calvin finished 2-13 overall but is looking for improvement in 2014. The Calvin Sports Information Office caught up with Kamstra earlier this week and produced an interview that previews the upcoming season.
