Calvin Men Claim Clean Sweep of Six Events Friday Night at MIAA Swimming and Diving Championships

Coming into the third day of the MIAA Swim Championships at the Venema Aquatic Center, the Calvin men’s swim and dive team held a 47 point lead over rival Hope College. The Knights lead continued to expand on Friday night as they swept first place in all of the men’s events, and Calvin earned a 544-437 lead over Hope as it looked ahead to the final day of competition. In the first event, the Calvin relay team of freshman Brett Stoughton, sophomore Johnson Cochran, senior Peter Johnson, and senior Andrew Mitchell took first in the 200 yard medley relay in a time of 1:32.14, beating second-place Kalamazoo by .19 seconds. Stoughton later took first place in the 100 butterfly, Cochran claimed a win in the 100 breaststroke and Mitchell won in the 100 backstroke. Sophomore Caleb Meindertsma also won the 400 IM while sophomore Aaron Venema took home the gold medal in the 200 freestyle. The Calvin men’s total expanded to 544 points by the end of the night, with Hope sitting in second with 437. Kalamazoo is in third with 415.5, Albion in fourth with 402, Olivet in fifth with 207, and Alma in sixth with 113.5.

Calvin Women’s Swimming and Diving Takes Over the Lead at MIAA Championships

The Calvin women’s swim and dive team entered the third day of the MIAA Championships trailing rival Hope by nine points, 280-271. A strong night by the Calvin women, including a pair of top finishes on Friday however, set up the Knights with a 42 point lead over Hope heading into the final night. The Knights began the finals of the third day with a first place finish as the relay team of junior Erika Waugh, sophomore Michaela Rookus, senior Kristin Kinzer, and junior Kathryn Wrobel finished the 200 medley relay in 1:46.66. Calvin then earned four out of the six top spots in the 100 yard breaststroke. In a time of 1:05.31, Rookus took first for the Knights. Junior Lexi Scott followed in third in 1:06.16, freshman Adrienne Wesselius fourth in 1:08.00, and freshman Nicole Karl in sixth in 1:09.81. The strong night from the Calvin women puts them into first heading into the final night, with 586 points while Hope sits in second at 544 points. Kalamazoo is in third with 391, Albion in fourth with 335, Alma in fifth with 283, and Olivet in sixth with 170.

Calvin Men’s Cross Country Team Receives USTFCCCA All-Academic Honors

The United States Track and Field Cross Country Coaches Association has named its 2014 All-Academic team and individual recipients in men’s cross country and the Calvin men’s cross country team has received accolades on both counts. Led by head coach Brian Diemer, the Calvin men’s team posted a team cumulative grade point average this past fall of 3.38. In order to receive the award, teams must post a minimum team GPA of 3.10. Individually, Calvin had five members of its men’s team receive honors. Those five individuals include seniors Sam Kerk (Hartland, WI/Lake Country Lutheran HS) and Philip Spitzer (Buckley/Buckley HS), juniors Josh Ferguson (Naperville, IL/Neuqua Valley HS) and Steven Haagsma (Grandville/Calvin Christian HS) and sophomore Jeff Meitler (New Berlin, WI/Milwaukee Lutheran HS). Individuals needed to have compiled a cumulative grade point average of 3.30 or greater through the most-recent semester and placed in the top 35 at the NCAA III Regional Championships.

Calvin Women’s Cross Country Team Receives USTFCCCA All-Academic Honors

The United States Track and Field Cross Country Coaches Association has named its 2014 All-Academic team and individual recipients in women’s cross country and the Calvin women’s cross country team has received accolades on both counts. Continuing a streak that began in 1987, the Calvin women’s cross country team has once again been named a USTFCCCA All-Academic team recipient. Led by head coach Brian Diemer, the Knights posted a team cumulative grade point average this past fall of 3.53. In order to receive the award, teams must post a minimum team GPA of 3.10. The Calvin individuals that received the honor include seniors Alyssa Oram (Cheboygan, Mich.),  Nicole Michmerhuizen (Holland/Holland Christian HS), juniors Kimby Penning (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS), Sarah Danner (Watkins Glen, NY/Charles Dickerson HS), Kate Ardinger (Elmhurst, IL/Timothy Christian HS), and freshman Cassie Vince (Amherst, OH/Amherst HS).

Men’s Swimming and Diving Continues to Build Lead at MIAA Championships

A day after setting the MIAA record in the 800 yard freestyle relay, the Calvin men’s swim and dive team looked to continue its strong swimming on day two of the MIAA Championships. In the first event of the evening, the 200 freestyle relay, Calvin’s relay team of sophomore Brandon Muma, sophomore Mitch Schroder, freshman Eli Holstege, and junior Alex Boumann took fourth in 1:24.92. In the 500 freestyle, sophomores Aaron Venema and Caleb Meindertsma dominated the field. The two sophomores took 1-2 in the event, finishing in 4:34.00 and 4:35.59, respectively. Both times beat the previous Calvin record, set by Venema earlier in the year, and both swimmers finished ahead of defending champion Brad Melpolder of Albion, who placed third in 4:42.26. In the 200 yard individual medley, the Knights picked up another 1-2 finish, with junior Travis Vincent taking first in 1:53.64 and freshman Brett Stoughton finishing second in 1:54.48. Sophomore Johnson Cochran finished seventh in the final in 1:56.33.

Women’s Swimming and Diving in Second After Day Two of MIAA Championships - Waugh Breaks Record

With two days of competition left to go at the MIAA Swimming and Diving Championships, the Calvin women’s team sits in second place with 271 points – nine points behind first place Hope.The Knights started out the second session of Thursday’s meet with a second place finish in the 200 free relay final with the quartet of Adrienne Wesselius, Michaela Rookus, Kristen Kinzer, and Kathryn Wrobel. The team posted a time of 1:36.25. Next was the 500 free finals where the Knights took fourth and sixth. Fourth place was taken by Kathryn Wrobel with a time of 5:07.93 and sixth was taken by Elizabeth Schleh with a time of 5:16.68. Rookus later won the 200 IM title for the second straight year, recording a time of 2:07.62. Junior Erika Waugh had a big day, breaking the MIAA record in the 100 backstroke twice as the leadoff leg of Calvin’s 400 medley relay. In the morning prelims, she clocked a time of 57.52 and then came back with a record time of 57.44 in the evening finals. Waugh’s 100 back time broke a 20-year-old MIAA record, set originally by Hope’s Susan Looman (:57.82)  in 1994 and equaled in 2009 by Hope’s Brittaney Reest Delo.

Women’s Swimming and Diving Claims 800 Freestyle Relay Victory at MIAA Championships

The Calvin women’s swimming and diving team got off to a winning start on Wednesday night at the MIAA Swimming and Diving Championships, winning the 800 freestyle relay with a time of 7:42.39, finishing a second-and-a-half ahead of second place Hope. Calvin’s relay team consisted of juniors Erika Waugh, Kathryn Wrobel and Alex Dhaenens and senior Margaret Rechel. The first place performance bumps Calvin into the early lead in the team standings with 40 points. Action continues on Thursday with prelims set for 10 a.m. and finals slated for 5:30 p.m. inside Calvin’s Venema Aquatic Center.

Men’s Swimming and Diving Shatters MIAA and Calvin Marks in 800 Freestyle Relay Win

The Calvin men’s swimming and diving team got off to a blazing start on the first night of competition at the MIAA Championships, winning the 800 freestyle relay in an MIAA record and school record time of 6:45.68. Calvin’s relay consisted of senior Andrew Mitchell who led off the relay with a 200 freestyle (split) school record time of 1:40.08, sophomore Aaron Venema, sophomore Mitch Schroder and junior Alex Baumann. Baumann held off a late charge from Albion’s anchor Brad Melpolder who made a push for the win but came in less than two-tenths of a second behind Calvin’s first place time. Calvin’s time took more than 2.6 seconds off the previous MIAA record set by Kalamazoo in 2011 and nearly four seconds off Calvin’s school record time of 6:49.11 set back in December at the Calvin Winter Invitational. After one day of competition, Calvin has a first place score of 40 points. Action continues on Thursday morning with prelims set for 10 a.m. All of the action is taking place inside Calvin’s Venema Aquatic Center.

Men’s Basketball Defeats Kalamazoo 86-59

The Calvin men’s basketball team hosted the Hornets of Kalamazoo College on Wednesday evening, looking to stay within a game of Hope College for first place. In the meeting between the Knights and Hornets earlier this season, Calvin earned a 90-72 victory. Playing at Van Noord Arena, it was much of the same as the Knights rolled to a dominating 86-59 win, with four Calvin players scoring in double figures. Senior Tyler Kruis led the Knights with 16 points while sophomores Austin Parks and B.J. Van Loo each added 13. Freshman Brad Visser scored 12 points off the bench.The Knights now look forward to Saturday when they travel to Trine to face the Thunder in a 1 p.m. contest.

Women’s Basketball Rolls to 88-59 Victory at Rochester College

OAKLAND – Calvin improved to 16-6 overall with an 88-59 non-conference victory over Rochester College Wednesday night in a game played at Oakland Christian High School. Calvin roared out to a 45-26 halftime lead and never looked back at it forced the host Warriors into 25 turnovers. Calvin shot 46 percent from the field and had four players notch double-digits in scoring led by junior Breanna Verkaik with 14 points while freshman Anna Timmer had 11 points and juniors Maria DeKuiper and Hannah Acre 10 points apiece. Timmer also had six rebounds and four steals. As a team, Calvin had 13 players reach the scoring column. Calvin also outrebounded Rochester 39-38. Rochester was led in scoring by Megan Heiden with 13 points while Ke’ala Ka’aikala had 12 points. Calvin will now prepare for a pivotal MIAA contest on Saturday against nationally-ranked Olivet at 3 p.m. at Calvin’s Van Noord Arena. The Knights trail Olivet by one game in the league standings.
