Holstege Brothers Critical to Calvin Winter Sports Success

Athletic siblings are something that can bolster a sports team to the point of an unfair advantage.  There are sport-defining examples like Venus and Serena Williams, and smaller examples on seemingly every high school track and soccer team in existence.  Calvin College is no different, as the performances of junior Erik Holstege and freshman Eli Holstege have been instrumental in Calvin’s success so far this winter sports season on the track and swimming teams. Both individuals have played a key role in their success of their teams as Erik is pushing to qualify for the upcoming NCAA III Indoor Track and Field Championships in the heptathlon while Eli was a key point scorer on Calvin’s MIAA championship men’s swimming and diving team.

Tyler Kruis Named MIAA Player of the Week in Men’s Basketball for Third Time

ROYAL OAK, Mich.  – The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has named Calvin center Tyler Kruis its Player of the Week in men’s basketball for games played through February 15. Kruis, a senior from Grand Rapids (Grandville Calvin Christian HS), averaged 17.5 points as the Knights won twice to stay within striking distance of first place in the MIAA race heading into the final week of the regular season. He scored 16 points and added four assists in an 86-59 win over Kalamazoo, and then added 19 points, including a clutch 3-point shot with 34 seconds remaining to put his team in the lead, to go along with seven rebounds in a 69-65 road win at Trine. Kruis, who is being honored as Player of the Week for the third time this season and fourth time in his career, shot 64 percent from the field (14 of 22) and made all six of his free throws for the week.

Calvin Men’s Tennis Competes at West Michigan Indoor Doubles Tournament

The Calvin men’s tennis swung into action Friday night at the West Michigan Indoor Doubles Tournament hosted by Hope College at the DeWitt Tennis Center. In the championship draw, senior Loukas Peterson and freshman Taylor Asfour finished sixth, posting a 1-2 record in the day. In the varsity draw, senior John Strikwerda and sophomore Matt Buesing also took sixth place, recording a 1-2 record during the tournament. In the challenger draw, senior Stephan Healy and junior Tom Griffin took fourth place, winning their opening match before dropping their next two. The tandem of freshman Anthony Vroon and Jared Doezema also competed in the challenger draw and placed eighth. Calvin’s next scheduled match is March 11 when the Knights host Cornerstone at the Huizenga Tennis and Track Center in a dual match at 6 p.m.

Women’s Track and Field Wins Calvin Relays / Men’s Team Second

The Calvin men’s and women’s track and field teams hosted the Calvin Relays on Saturday inside the Huizenga Tennis and Track Center while competing on the Sturrus Track. The Calvin women’s team took first place with a team score of 190 points with Hope taking second with 15 points, Aquinas third with 129 and Alma fourth with 93. The Calvin men’s team took second with 151 points as Aquinas won with 155 points. Hope was third (103), Spring Arbor fourth (66) and Alma fifth (61).

Final Calvin Swimming and Diving News and Notes from MIAA Championships

The Calvin men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams wrapped up an historic week of competition at the MIAA Championships Saturday night inside the Venema Aquatic Center as both teams captured league titles. The Calvin women’s team captured its 10th consecutive MIAA title - matching the longest championship streak in MIAA women’s swimming and diving history while the Calvin men’s team captured its first-ever league title. It marked the first time since the 2004 season that the same school has captured both the men’s and women’s titles in the same year. It also marked the 10th time in MIAA history with Hope accomplishing the feat five times and Kalamazoo four times.

Calvin Men’s Swimming and Diving Wins First-Ever MIAA Title

The Calvin men’s swim and dive team entered the fourth and final day of the MIAA Championships looking for its first conference title in program history at Calvin’s Venema Aquatic Center. At the conclusion of the day, Calvin accomplished its long sought-after goal, winning the MIAA title with a first place score of 795 points with Hope second with 669 points.The Knight men have participated in MIAA swimming for 44 years, but have yet to win a league championship. Heading into Saturday, the Knights held a 107 point advantage over Hope and were well on their way to making history. Calvin closed off the MIAA Championships meet with individual league titles by Brett Stoughton in the 200 butterfly, Johnson Cochran in the 200 breaststroke and Caleb Meindertsma in the 1,650 freestyle.

Calvin Women’s Swimming and Diving Completes Decade of Dominance with 10 Straight MIAA Title

Calvin completed a decade of dominance by winning its 10th consecutive MIAA title on Saturday night, finishing the four day MIAA Championships competition with a total of 895 points, 37 points ahead of runner-up Hope. Calvin entered Saturday’s competition with a 42-point lead and had a solid performance throughout Saturday to hold on to its lead and the title. Calvin’s MIAA title is its 12th in program history. Calvin’s streak of 10 consecutive MIAA titles matches the longest streak in MIAA women’s swimming and diving history as Hope also won 10 straight titles from 1980-to-1989. Sophomore Michaela Rookus was named the MIAA’s Most Valuable Swimmer after winning three individual titles over the course of the four-day competition. Rookus is the sixth individual in Calvin women’s swimming and diving history to receive MIAA Most Valuable Swimmer honors.

Women’s Basketball Falls to Olivet 82-67 - Remains in Third Place in MIAA Standings

In a showdown for second place in the MIAA standings, the nationally-ranked Comets of Olivet withstood a furious effort by the Knights of Calvin in gaining an 82-67 victory Saturday afternoon inside Calvin’s Van Noord Arena. With the win, Olivet clinches the number-two seed for the upcoming MIAA Tournament and homecourt advantage for the MIAA Tournament semifinals February 27. Junior Breanna Verkaik led Calvin with a career-high 29 points on 10-of-14 shooting to go with seven rebounds while junior Hannah Acre added 11 points and seven rebounds off the bench. Junior Maria DeKuiper had nine points while senior Kirstin Tripp had nine assists. Calvin returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts Adrian at 6 p.m. Adrian is currently tied for fourth place in the league standings with Kalamazoo at 8-6, two games behind Calvin.

Late Three-Point Surge Lifts Calvin Men’s Basketball Team to 69-65 Win at Trine

The Calvin men’s basketball team traveled to Trine University on Saturday afternoon, looking to build on a two-game win streak as the Knights look forward to the MIAA Tournament just two weeks away. Calvin came in at 9-2 in the MIAA and in second place, while Trine entered as the third-place team in conference at 7-4. With the win, Calvin clinches a homecourt spot for the MIAA Tournament semifinals. Calvin trailed through much of the second half but three-pointers from junior Jordan Brink and senior Tyler Kruis in the final minutes of play helped the Knights gain the lead and eventually the win. The three-pointer by Kruis came with 28 seconds to play and gave Calvin a 65-64 lead. The Knights then got a defensive stop and a series of free throws in the closing seconds to seal to the win. Kruis had 19 points, Brink 18 points and sophomore Jordan Daley 10 points to lead the Knights (18-5 overall, 10-2 MIAA) in scoring. Calvin will host Olivet next Wednesday at Van Noord Arena at 8 p.m.

Women’s Tennis Opens Season with 8-1 Win Over Cornerstone

The Calvin women’s tennis team opened its season on Friday with an 8-1 non-conference dual match victory over Cornerstone. The match was the opening match for first-year head coach Kevin Van Haitsma at the helm of the Knights. With a roster of just five players, Cornerstone conceded matches at three doubles and six singles before the match began. Up 2-0, Calvin then split the remaining doubles points as Calvin’s number-one tandem of junior Megan Visser and freshman Claire Spoelhof defeated Heidi Boesl and Ashley Greene 8-3. Cornerstone’s number-two squad of Janie Silvers and Allison Rusticus gained a point back by defeating Calvin’s Bethany Zoerhof and Ellie Benzel 8-4. Calvin then claimed the remaining singles points as Visser defeated Boesl 6-0, 6-0 at one singles; Spoelhof defeated Nicole Kunnen 6-4, 7-6 at two singles, Zoerhof defeated Silvers 6-0, 6-1 at three singles, Benzel defeated Rusticus 6-1, 6-1 at four singles and freshman Liz Turner defeated Ashley Green 6-1, 6-2 at No. 5 singles. Friday’s match was played inside Calvin’s Huizenga Tennis and Track Center. Calvin returns to action next Friday when it travels to Wheaton College (IL) for a match against the Thunder. Calvin will then face Coe the following afternoon in Wheaton, Illinois.
