Breanna Verkaik Named MIAA Co-Player of Week in Women’s Basketball

ROYAL OAK, Mich.  – The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has named Olivet guard Kelsey Campbell and Calvin forward Breanna Verkaik its Players of the Week in women’s basketball for games played through February 22. Verkaik, a sophomore from Holland (Holland Christian HS), averaged 17.5 points per game in leading the Knights to two MIAA victories. She had 12 points and four assists in an 82-55 win over Adrian. She then followed with 23 points, five rebounds, four blocked shots and three steals while playing only 22 minutes as Calvin defeated Kalamazoo, 72-57. Verkaik, who is being honored as Player of the Week for the second time this season and in her career, shot 57 percent from the field (12 of 21), 44 percent on 3-point shots (4 of 9) and 78 percent from the line (7 of 9) for the week. Calvin will travel to Olivet on Thursday for an MIAA Tournament semifinal game slated for 7:30 p.m.

Women’s Tennis Defeated by Coe College and Wheaton on Weekend Swing

WHEATON, IL – The Calvin women’s tennis team dropped an 8-1 decision to regionally-ranked Coe College of Iowa on Saturday to dip to 1-2 on the year. On Friday, Calvin dropped a 9-0 decision to regionally-ranked Wheaton College of Illinois. Calvin’s lone point in the loss to Coe came at number-four singles as freshman Ellie Benzel (San Dimas, CA/San Dimas HS) as she claimed a hard-fought 6-3, 2-6, 10-8 win over Diannah Watson. Calvin returns to action next Friday when it hosts Aquinas in a non-conference dual match.

Men’s Lacrosse Defeated by Benedictine 14-2

LISLE, IL – Calvin dipped to 0-2 on the year with a 14-2 loss at Benedictine University Saturday afternoon.Benedictine led 6-0 at halftime and then outscored Calvin 6-0 in the third quarter to seal the win. Benedictine outshot Calvin 43-30. The Knights received goals from freshman Andrew Haan (Holland/Holland Christian HS) and freshman Joel Schaefer (Clarksville, MD/Annapolis Area Christian HS). Haan and junior Tim Marco (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) were also credited with one assist apiece. Senior Casey Harless (DeWitt/DeWitt HS) had 15 saves in goal for the Knights. Sophomore Tyler DeKryger (Cadillac/Cadillac HS) scooped up 12 ground balls for Calvin while Schaefer was 3-for-6 on faceoff opportunities. Calvin will now prepare to face Defiance College next Saturday at 1 p.m. The game was originally scheduled to be played in Grand Rapids but will now be played in Ohio because of more favorable field conditions.

Men’s Basketball Claims 83-57 Win Over Albion on Senior Day

The Knights hosted the Britons of Albion in their regular season finale on Saturday afternoon. Both teams entered with their spots secured in the MIAA Tournament, and with Calvin earning the second seed, and Albion the third seed, the teams are set to meet this upcoming Wednesday night as well. The Knights honored their three seniors, Mickey DeVries (Lansing/Lansing Christian HS), Tyler Kruis (Grand Rapids/Calvin Christian HS), and Jordan Mast (Holland/Holland Christian HS) before the game. With a strong first half, Calvin jumped out to an early double-digit lead and never looked back, leading from start-to-finish as the Knights routed the Britons 83-57. Tyler Kruis and Tyler Dykstra each scored 15 points to pace the Knights, setting a new career-high for Dykstra. Junior Jordan Brink (Dyer, IN/Illiana Christian HS) added 13 points while freshman Brad Visser (Grand Rapids/Calvin Christian HS) had 10 off the bench. Calvin will now prepare to face Albion once against next Wednesday as the two squads meet in an MIAA Tournament game at Van Noord Arena at 7:30 p.m.

Women’s Basketball Closes Regular Season with 72-57 win at Kalamazoo

KALAMAZOO – Calvin closed out its regular season campaign with a 72-57 victory at Kalamazoo College, boosting its overall season record to 18-7 and completing its MIAA season at 12-4 – good for third place in the final league standings. Calvin was led in scoring by junior Breanna Verkaik (Holland/Holland Christian HS) who pumped in a game-high 23 points on 8-of-12 shooting while also blocking four shots and grabbing five rebounds. Engelhard and sophomore Kally Verkaik (Holland/Holland Christian HS) had eight points apiece while DeKuiper and junior Hannah Acre (DeWitt/DeWitt HS) had seven points apiece. Acre also ripped down a game-high 11 rebounds as the Knights held a 43-39 rebounding advantage. Kalamazoo was led in scoring by Perri Nicholson with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Calvin will now prepare for the MIAA Tournament next week as the Knights travel to Olivet next Thursday for a 7:30 p.m. contest.

Calvin Track and Field Teams Compete at GVSU Tuneup Invite

ALLENDALE - The Calvin men’s and women’s track and field teams competed at the Grand Valley State Tuneup Invitational on Friday. Both teams had a number of strong performances. Sophomore Eric Jipping led the charge with a career-best throw of 51-8 1/4 in the shot put that was good for fourth place, surpassing his previous mark by more than a foot. The throw begins to put Jipping into consideration for the national list in the event. Junior Erik Holstege also had a big day,taking sixth in the 60 meter hurdles in 8.67 while also tossing a big throw of 41-8 in the shot put. Holstege will attempt to put his multi-events to work again next Friday and Saturday when he competes in the heptathlon inside Calvin’s Huizenga Tennis and Track Center at the Calvin Championships. Other notables included freshman Andrew Woznick turning in a time of 1:57.96 in the 800 meters, senior David Vande Bunte clocking a career-best time of 4:17.86 in the mile run and junior Josh Ferguson taking fifth (8:35.91) and senior Gabe Gunnink taking sixth (8:38.64) in the 3,000 meter run. On the women’s side, senior Julie Busscher had a strong showing in the 200 meters, taking sixth in a season-best time of 26.04 while junior Kelley Tuinenga had a season-best time of 1:00.88 in the 400 meters. In the 3,000 meters, junior Kate Ardinger was fifth (10:35.64) while junior Kimby Penning was sixth (10:37.19). In the 5,000 meters, junior Sarah Danner had a big night, winning with a time of 18:02.98 while senior Alyssa Oram had a strong third place time of 18:31.65. Senior Hilary Banning was fourth in the triple jump (34-3) while freshman Bethany Van Eck was fifth in the long jump (15-5 1/2) and eighth in the 60 meter hurdles (9.82). Both Calvin teams will now prepare for the Calvin Championships next Friday and Saturday at the Huizenga Tennis and Track Center.

Calvin Lands Record Seven on All-MIAA Men’s Swimming and Diving Team

A record seven members of the Calvin men’s swimming and diving team have received All-MIAA honors. Those seven individuals are senior Andrew Mitchell, junior Travis Vincent, sophomores Johnson Cochran, Caleb Meindertsma, Aaron Venema and freshmen Dirk Tanis and Brett Stoughton. Last weekend, Calvin made school history, winning its first-ever MIAA title in men’s swimming and diving, recording a first place score of 795 points, finishing more than 125 points ahead of second place Hope College.

Calvin Lands Five on All-MIAA Women’s Swimming and Diving Team - Rookus MIAA Most Valuable Swimmer

Five members of the Calvin women’s swimming and diving team have received All-MIAA accolades led by sophomore Michaela Rookus who has been named the MIAA’s Most Valuable Swimmer. Rookus is the sixth individual in Calvin women’s swimming history to be named the league’s Most Valuable Swimmer, joining Katie Nagelkirk (2002 & 2003), Rebekah Weima (2004-2007), Emily Roberts (2009), Maggie Vail (2010) and Elizabeth Counsell (2011). Calvin’s Erica Deur (2006-2009) and Samantha Klaasen (2011-2013) have also received MIAA Most Valuable Diver honors from Calvin. Joining Rookus on the All-MIAA women’s swimming and diving team from Calvin are sophomore Sarah Roth and juniors Lexi Scott, Erika Waugh and Kathryn Wrobel.

Men’s Basketball Defeats Olivet 83-63 - Gains Number-Two Seed for MIAA Tournament

The Calvin men’s basketball team hosted the Comets of Olivet on Wednesday evening at Van Noord Arena and came away with an 83-63 victory, boosting its overall season record to 19-5 and its MIAA mark to 11-2. With Hope defeating Kalamazoo Wednesday night, Calvin is set in the number-two spot in the league standings and in the upcoming league tournament. The Knights will host Albion next Wednesday in an MIAA Tournament semifinal at 7:30 p.m. – marking the first of two meetings against the Brits in a four-day span. Sophomore Jordan Daley led the Knights with a career-high 22 points, adding seven assists and five rebounds, while senior Tyler Kruis scored 15 and junior Tyler Dykstra added 14, tying his career best.

Women’s Basketball Clinches Third Place in MIAA With 82-55 Win Over Adrian

The Calvin women’s basketball entered Wednesday night’s MIAA matchup looking to secure its spot in the four-team MIAA Tournament, while the Adrian Bulldogs were tied with Kalamazoo and fighting for their postseason lives. Wednesday night was also Senior Night for Calvin, as the team honored its lone senior in Kirstin Tripp (Brighton/Brighton HS). Calvin made Senior Night a winning night as the Maroon and Gold defeated the Bulldogs 82-55 to improve to 17-7 overall and to 11-4 in the MIAA. Junior Maria DeKuiper (Bradenton, FL/Bradenton Christian HS) matched a career scoring high in leading the Knights with 18 points.  Calvin also clinches the third seed for next week’s MIAA Tournament and will travel to Olivet on February 27 for an MIAA Tournament semifinal game at 7:30 p.m. Calvin now looks forward to its regular season finale on Saturday at Kalamazoo College. Tipoff is scheduled for 3 p.m. Kalamazoo is currently tied with Adrian for the fourth and final spot for the MIAA Tournament.
