Kathryn Wrobel Named MIAA Women’s Athlete of the Week for Swimming and Diving

ROYAL OAK, Mich.  – The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has named Calvin’s Kathryn Wrobel its MIAA Women’s Athlete of the Week in swimming and diving for meets through January 18. Wrobel, a junior from Arden Hills, Minn. (Mounds View HS), won three freestyle events in leading Calvin to a 193-105 MIAA dual meet victory over Kalamazoo. She won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:58.28, the 500 freestyle in 5:12.70 and the 1,000 freestyle in 10:37.68. Wrobel is being honored as Athlete of the Week for the first time in her career. Wrobel is part of a Calvin women’s swimming and diving team that is currently ranked 15th nationally. The Knights will head to rival Hope on Saturday for a 1 p.m. dual meet.

Tyler Kruis Named MIAA Player of the Week in Men’s Basketball For Second Time

ROYAL OAK, Mich.  – The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has named Calvin center Tyler Kruis its Player of the Week in men’s basketball for games played through January 18. Kruis, a senior from Grand Rapids (Grandville Calvin Christian HS), averaged 22.0 points, 7.0 rebounds and 2.0 blocked shots in leading the Knights to a pair of MIAA victories. He scored 17 points and grabbed seven rebounds in just 22 minutes of action in a 78-54 victory over Adrian, then scored a career-high 27 points on 12-of-15 shooting from the field, and collected seven boards in a 90-72 win over Kalamazoo. Kruis, who is being honored as Player of the Week for the second time this season and third time in his career, shot 74 percent from the field (20 of 27) for the week. Calvin is back in action on Wednesday when it hosts Trine at 7:30 p.m. at Van Noord Arena in a showdown for first place in the MIAA standings. Both teams are locked in a four-way tie along with Albion and Hope with 3-1 conference records.

Women’s Swimming and Diving Team Cruises to Dual Meet Win Over Kalamazoo

Competing on Senior Day, the Calvin women’s swimming and diving recorded a dominating 193-105 dual meet victory over visiting Kalamazoo inside the Venema Aquatic Center. Ranked 15th by Collegeswimming.com, Calvin is now 6-3 in dual meet competition heading into a dual meet at rival Hope next Saturday in Holland. Men’s Swimming and Diving Team Defeats Kalamazoo For First Time since 2006

Competing on Senior Day, the Calvin men’s swimming and diving team upped its season dual meet record to 5-3 with an impressive 175-122 victory over visiting Kalamazoo Saturday afternoon inside the Venema Aquatic Center. The victory was Calvin’s second-ever over Kalamazoo in dual meet competition and its first since 2006. Ranked 13th in the most recent Collegeswimming.com Top 25 poll, Calvin took first place in 10 events while providing quality depth consistently throughout the meet.

Men’s Basketball Picks Up 90-72 Road Win at Kalamazoo

The Knights traveled to Kalamazoo and the Anderson Athletic Center to face the Hornets of Kalamazoo College in a Saturday afternoon conference contest and came away with a 90-72 win. Calvin entered the game 10-4 overall, 2-1 in conference and in a four-way tie atop the MIAA. The Hornets, at 6-8 and 1-2 in the league, had the highest scoring offense in the conference at 80.3 points-per-game coming into Saturday. Holding the Hornets top scorer in check while shooting 62.5% from the field, the Knights earned a hard-fought victory on the road. Senior center Tyler Kruis had a season-high 27 points while junior guard Jordan Brink had 22. Calvin will host Trine University next Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. at Van Noord Arena.

Women’s Basketball Extends Win Streak to Three With 75-58 Win Over Kalamazoo

Saturday afternoon at Van Noord Arena the Calvin women’s basketball team won its third consecutive league game with a 75-58 victory over the Kalamazoo College Hornets. The Knights are getting hot at the right time as they near the heart of their season and conference play. Previously tied at third place in the MIAA with Calvin, this contest moved the Hornets into the fourth place slot, which they will share with Adrian. The Knights maintain their third place conference standing and move to 5-2 in league play; the win boosts Calvin’s overall record to 10-5.

Michmerhuizen Leads the Charge for Calvin Women’s Track & Field at GVSU’s Mike Lints Open

ALLENDALE - The Calvin women’s indoor track and field team had a solid day of performances at the Mike Lints Open hosted by Grand Valley State on Friday. Competing in a field of 18 teams, Calvin took seventh with 25 points. Grand Valley won the meet with 127.5 points. The highlight of the meet for the Calvin came came in the 5,000 meter run as senior Nicole Michmerhuizen (Holland/Holland Christian HS) won the race in a time of 17:06.60 that will put her near the top of the NCAA III indoor performance list in the event thus far. She was part of four Calvin runners that scored in the race as junior Kimby Penning (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) was third (18:33.53), junior Sarah Danner (Watkins Glenn, NY/Dickerson HS) fourth (18:34.04) and junior Kate Ardinger (Elmhurst, IL/Timothy Christian HS) seventh (19:29.95). Also scoring points for Calvin were senior Hilary Banning (Whitinsville, MA/Whitinsville Christian HS) in the triple jump with a seventh place finish (34-4 3/4). Calvin will travel to Kankakee, Illinois, next weekend to compete at the NAIA/DIII Challenge hosted by Olivet Nazarene University.

Men’s Track and Field Team Has Strong Showing at GVSU Mike Lints Open

ALLENDALE - The Calvin men’s indoor track and field team scored 30 points and finished in seventh place in a field of 20 teams at the Mike Lints Open hosted by Grand Valley State University Friday. The Knights were strong in the 5,000 meters as freshman Zac Nowicki (Comstock Park/Calvin Christian HS) won the race in a stellar time of 15:24.13. Nowicki was part of four Calvin runners that scored in the race as sophomore Ethan Anderson (Stillwater, MN/Stillwater Area HS) was third (15:26.86), junior Steven Haagsma (Grandville/Calvin Christian HS) fourth (15:34.65) and junior Josh Ferguson (Naperville, IL/Nequa Valley HS) fifth (15:38.95). Also he did not score in the event, senior David Vande Bunte (Byron Center/Byron Center HS) had a big race in the 3,000 meters, placing ninth with a time of 8:35.55. Junior Erik Holstege (Kewsick, VA/Monticello HS) came up with a sixth place time in the 60 meter hurdles (8.59) and then took ninth in the long jump (21-5 1/2). Sophomore Eric Jipping (Canton/Plymouth Christian HS) showed signs of good things to come by placing seventh in the shot put with a throw of 48-10. Calvin will travel to Kankakee, Illinois, next weekend to compete at the NAIA/DIII Challenge hosted by Olivet Nazarene University.

Calvin-Hope Men’s Basketball Rivalry to Be Subject of Documentary February 2

The Calvin/Hope men’s basketball rivalry will be the subject of a documentary produced by Calvin alumn Ryan Terpstra. The documentary is scheduled to air on February 2 on WOOD-TV 8 in West Michigan at noon. It will also re-air on cable outlets throughout the state of Michigan after the initial February 2 launch.

New Jersey Native Finds His Niche at Calvin College

Behind every good team there is a great leader. For the Calvin College Knights, one of those leaders is the head of their student cheering section. Senior Ben de Waal Malefyt directs Knight Nation with his booming voice and contagious energy. He also serves as a leader within the Calvin track and field program where he competes as a thrower on the men’s team. The journey from New Jersey has been an interesting one for de Waal Malefyt but it has also been well worth it.
