Calvin Lands Four on NSCAA/Continental Tire Division III Men’s Soccer Teams

2013 NSCAA Division III All-Central Region Men's Soccer Teams

Four members of the MIAA champion Calvin men’s soccer team have received Continental Tire Division III All-Central Region honors from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. Named to the first team from Calvin are junior Travis Vegter and sophomore Taylor Pruis while senior Zach Willis and junior Sean Broekhuizen have been named to the second team. As members of the first team, Vegter and Pruis are both eligible for Division III All-America consideration. Vegter and Willis are receiving all-region honors for the first time while Broekhuizen and Pruis are first time all-region selections. Under the direction of head coach Ryan Souders, Calvin finished the 2013 season with an overall record of 14-5-1 while capturing an unprecedented seventh consecutive MIAA regular season crown with a 12-2-0 league mark.

Andrew Mitchell Named MIAA Men’s Athlete of the Week in Swimming and Diving

ROYAL OAK, Mich.  – The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has named Calvin’s Andrew Mitchell its Men’s Athlete of the Week in swimming and diving for meets through December 8. Mitchell, a senior from Iron Mountain (Kingsford HS), broke two individual school records and had a hand in two school-record relays at the Calvin Winter Invitational. He broke the school record in the 100-yard freestyle in :46.06 and the 200 freestyle with a MIAA-best time of 1:40.11. He also swam on Calvin record-setting performances in the 200 medley relay and 800 freestyle relay. He also posted the MIAA’s best time this season in the 100 backstroke with a time of :51.93. Mitchell is being honored as Athlete of the Week for the first time in his career.

Tyler Kruis Named MIAA Player of the Week in Men’s Basketball

ROYAL OAK, Mich.  – The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has named Calvin center Tyler Kruis its Player of the Week in men’s basketball for games played through December 8. Kruis, a senior from Grand Rapids (Grandville Calvin Christian HS), averaged 21.5 points and 6.5 rebounds during the MIAA/CCIW Challenge at Calvin over the weekend. He scored 26 points on 11-of-13 shooting from the field, grabbed seven rebounds and dished out three assists in a 74-68 loss to Carthage, Wis. He then added 17 points and six rebounds as the Knights posted an impressive 78-51 victory over Wheaton, Ill. in a battle of nationally-ranked teams. Kruis, who is being honored as Player of the Week for the first time this season and second time in his career, shot 75 percent (18 of 24) from the field during the tournament.Calvin is back in action on December 14 when it hosts Finlandia University at 3 p.m.

Calvin Men’s Swimming and Diving Second Places Second at Calvin Winter Invitational

The Calvin men’s swimming and diving team completed its most successful performance at its own Calvin Winter Invitational Saturday night, finishing second in the final standings with an overall team score of 583 points. Grand Valley State won the men’s competition with a first place team score of 1,320 points. On Saturday, Calvin continued to shatter school records and post NCAA III B’ cut qualifying times. In the morning prelims, sophomore Johnson Cochran (Mount Vernon, OH/Mount Vernon HS) broke his own school record in the 200 breaststroke with an NCAA III B’ cut qualifying time of 2:03.56. In the evening finals, he broke the record again, taking second with a time of 2:03.27. In the 500 freestyle, sophomore Aaron Venema (Grand Haven/Grand Haven HS) crushed the school record with an NCAA III B’ cut qualifying time of 4:35.44, breaking the previous school mark of 4:38.37 set by A.J. Penninga in 2003. Venema’s time was good for third place.In the 200 medley relay, Calvin’s team of freshman Brett Stoughton (Centerville, IN/Centerville HS), Cochran, senior Peter Johnson (Oak Forest, IL/Home Schooled) and senior Andrew Mitchell (Iron Mountain/Kingsford HS) raced to a school record and NCAA III B’ cut qualifying time of 1:32.83. The time breaks the previous school record of 1:33.75 set in 2002.  Yet another school record was broken by Mitchell in the morning prelims in the 100 freestyle as he cruised to a time of 46.06, breaking the previous record of 46.21 set by Brad White in 2002. Mitchell later took fourth in the evening finals with a time of 46.35.

Calvin Women’s Swimming and Diving Places Third at Calvin Winter Invitational

The Calvin women’s swimming and diving team completed a stellar weekend of competition on Saturday, finishing third at its own Calvin Winter Invitational with a final team score of 593 points. Grand Valley State won the women’s competition with 1,193 points while Northern Michigan was second with 742.5 points. A highlight of the day was turned in by sophomore Michaela Rookus (Hudsonville/Hudsonville HS) as she broke Becky Weima’s school record in the 100 butterfly with a time of 58.04. Weima’s previous school record time was 58.47. Rookus later took third in the 200 IM with a time of 2:08.38. In the 500 freestyle, junior Kathryn Wrobel (Arden Hills, MN/Moundsview HS) had a season-best time of 5:10.29 in the morning prelims and then took sixth in the evening finals with a time of 5:17.05. In the 200 backstroke, junior Erika Waugh (Berne, IN/South Adams HS) took fourth in a time of 2:07.77 after clocking a season-best time of 2:06.87 in the morning prelims. Junior Lexi Scott (Richmond, IN/Richmond HS) had a sixth place finish in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:26.82 and was later sixth in the 200 IM with a time of 2:10.74. Calvin’s 200 medley relay of senior Kristy Kinzer (Fort Wayne, IN/Homestead HS), Rookus, Scott and freshman Adrienne Wesselius (Sioux Center, IA/Unity Christian HS) took seventh in 1:48.54 while its 400 freestyle relay team of Rookus, senior Margaret Rechel (Worthington, OH/Thomas Worthington HS), Kinzer and Wrobel took fourth in a time of 3:36.03. In the women’s one-meter diving, junior Rebecca Mumby (Spring Lake/Spring Lake HS) took fifth (347.10) while freshman Becky Freed (Rochester, Hills/Rochester Stoney Creek HS) was eighth (328.15).

Women’s Basketball Stretches Win Streak to Three With 68-63 Victory at Trine

ANGOLA, IN – The Calvin women’s basketball team stretched its win streak to three games with a 68-63 conference victory at Trine University Saturday afternoon. Calvin led 40-26 at halftime and continued to hold a double-digit lead with five-and-a-half minutes remaining but a series of missed free throws by the Knights allowed Trine (1-5 overall, 0-1 MIAA) to creep to within three points with 19 seconds remaining at 66-63. Junior Hannah Acre (DeWitt/DeWitt HS) iced the game with a pair of free throws with 15 seconds remaining as the Knights held on for the win. Calvin (5-2 overall, 2-1 MIAA) received 19 points from junior Breanna Verkaik (Holland/Holland Christian HS) while junior Kayla Engelhard (Unionville/Saginaw Valley Lutheran HS) and Acre had 16 points apiece. Junior Maria DeKuiper (Bradenton, FL/Bradenton Christian HS) added nine points and five rebounds. Calvin returns to action on December 19 when it travels to Illinois Wesleyan for a 7 p.m. contest.

Men’s Basketball Rolls to 78-51 Win Over Wheaton at MIAA/CCIW Challenge

Calvin faced off against fellow top-25 ranked opponent Wheaton on Saturday afternoon on the second day of MIAA/CCIW Challenge. The Knights came in ranked ninth nationally while Wheaton came in ranked 13th. Playing arguably its most complete half of the season in the first half, Calvin took the lead early and did not look back, claiming a 78-51 victory. The final score marked Calvin’s largest-ever margin of victory over Wheaton in men’s basketball and snapped a seven-game losing streak against Wheaton dating back to 2005.Sophomore Jordan Daley and senior Tyler Kruis led the Knights with 17 points each. Daley’s point total tied a career high. Junior Jordan Brink added 16 points.The Knights now look forward to next week Saturday when they welcome Finlandia to Van Noord Arena. Next Saturday’s contest will start at 3 p.m.

Calvin Men’s Swimming and Diving Remains in Second Place at Calvin Winter Invite

The Calvin men’s swimming and diving team continued its strong performance at the Calvin Winter Invitational on Friday, maintaining a hold on second place in the overall team standings with 308 points, 5.5 points ahead of third place Wabash and 12 points ahead of fourth place Kalamazoo. Grand Valley holds the lead with 751 points.Sophomore Caleb Meindertsma (Annandale, VA/Trinity Christian HS) set his second school record in as many days, clocking in with a time of 4:07.48 in the 400 IM prelims Friday morning, breaking the previous record of 4:08.41 set by Brad Flikkema in 1998. The prelim time by Meindertsma was also an NCAA III B’ cut qualifying time.  In the evening finals, Meindertsma placed third in a time of 4:08.51. Other top-eight individual finishes for the Calvin men included freshman Brett Stoughton (Centerville, IN/Centerville HS) in the 200 butterfly with a fourth place time of 1:53.19 and freshman Dirk Tanis (Holland/Holland Christian HS) on the one-meter diving board with a fourth place score of 342.50. Calvin’s 200 freestyle relay team of sophomore Mitch Schroder (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS), senior Andrew Mitchell (Iron Mountain/Kingsford HS), freshman Eli Holstege (Kewsick, VA/Covenant HS) and junior Alex Baumann (Holland/Holland Christian HS) also took third in a time of 1:24.88. In an individual time trial later Friday evening, sophomore Johnson Cochran blasted out a school record time of 56.09, breaking his previous record of 56.83. His time is also an NCAA B’ cut qualifying time.

Women’s Swimming and Diving Team Remains Third Through Day Two of Calvin Winter Invite

Heading into the final day of competition, the Calvin women’s swimming and diving team is in third place at the Calvin Winter Invitational with 363 points. Grand Valley leads the standings with 684 points followed by Northern Michigan with 408. Calvin had a solid group of top-eight individual finishes on Friday. Sophomore Alayna Gallegos (Lakeville, MN/Lakeville HS) had a strong showing in the 200 butterfly, placing sixth in a time of 2:10.38.  She also added a sixth place time of 4:55.02 in the 400 IM later in the evening. Calvin also placed two in the top eight in the 200 freestyle as junior Kathryn Wrobel (Arden Hills, MN/Moundsview HS) was seventh (1:59.37) and senior Margaret Rechel (Worthington, OH/Thomas Worthington HS) eighth (2:00.85). In the 100 breaststroke finals, sophomore Michaela Rookus (Hudsonville/Hudsonville HS) took fourth with a season-best and NCAA III B’ cut qualifying time of 1:05.13. She later took fifth in the 50 freestyle with a season-best time of 24.44. In the 100 backstroke, junior Erika Waugh (Berne, IN/South Adams HS) was fifth in a season-best time of 58.82 while senior Kristy Kinzer (Fort Wayne, IN/Homestead HS) was seventh (59.67). In the diving competition, sophomore Lizz Roth (Brighton/Brighton HS) was sixth on the three-meter board with a score of 364.85 while junior Rebecca Mumby (Spring Lake/Spring Lake HS) was seventh (354.15) and freshman Becky Freed (Rochester Hills/Rochester Stoney Creek HS) eighth (343.50). In the 200 freestyle relay, the Calvin quartet of freshman Adrienne Wesselius (Sioux Center, IA/Unity Christian HS), Rookus, Kinzer and Wrobel was third in a time of 1:37.30.

Men’s Basketball Defeated by Carthage 72-68 in MIAA/CCIW Challenge

The Calvin men’s basketball team hosted a basketball tournament for the third straight weekend at Van Noord Arena, playing Carthage College in the second game of the MIAA-CCIW Challenge. Using a strong second half effort, Carthage defeated Calvin 74-68. In the first matchup of the night, Wheaton defeated Hope 80-61. Calvin, now 5-2, faces Wheaton tomorrow afternoon at 3 p.m. in the final contest of the Challenge. The Thunder come in with a record of 5-2 but are ranked #13 in the latest top 25 poll. In the first matchup of the afternoon, Hope plays Carthage at 1 p.m.
