Danielle Carter and Jaimie Verbal Receive MIAA Women’s Soccer Player of the Week Honors

ROYAL OAK, Mich.  Ė The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has named Calvin midfielder Danielle Carter and Calvin defender Jaimie Verbal its Players of the Week in womenís soccer for games played through November 9. Carter, a senior from DeWitt (DeWitt HS), provided solid ball distribution while also winning balls in the midfield with a high level of consistency as she led Calvin to three consecutive wins for the week to claim both the MIAA championship and the conference tournament.  She assisted on an crucial insurance goal in Saturdayís 2-0 win over Hope in the MIAA tournament championship game. Carter is being honored as Player of the Week for the first time in her career. Verbal, a sophomore from Whitmore Lake (Dexter HS), helped key a Calvin backline last week that posted three consecutive shutout victories as the Knights claimed the both the MIAA championship and the conference tournament. The Knights shut out Hope 1-0 in a showdown game for the MIAA championship, then defeated Adrian 3-0 and Hope 2-0 to win the MIAA tournament and claim the automatic bid to the NCAA Division III tournament. Verbal is being honored as Player of the Week for the first time in her career.

Calvin Volleyball to Host NCAA III Regional at Van Noord Arena

The Calvin women’s volleyball team will host an eight-team NCAA III regional Thursday, Friday and Saturday at Van Noord Arena. Calvin (29-1) will face Penn State-Behrend (22-8) in a first round match on Thursday at 8 p.m.. Other first round matches will see Wittenberg (23-8) going up against Bluffton (16-18) at 12:30 p.m., Chicago (26-10) going up against Buffalo State (25-9) at 3 p.m. and Mount Union (30-4) going up against Carnegie Mellon (25-9) at 5:30 p.m.. Thursday’s winners will play in regional semifinals on Friday with the regional final set for Saturday. Match times and ticket prices will be announced later Monday afternoon. Calvin is making its 10th consecutive trip to the NCAA III Tournament and its 23rd appearance overall. The Knights are 33-23 all-time in NCAA III Tournament play. A year ago, Calvin reached the NCAA III finals before falling to St. Thomas in a five-set match. In 2010, Calvin claimed the NCAA III title, defeating Emory University in four sets in the title tilt.

Rietema, Zietse and Danhoff Win MIAA Volleyball Awards - Calvin Players Named to All-MIAA Vball Team

The Calvin volleyball team picked up a complete sweep of the three major postseason awards presented by the MIAA Saturday night. Calvin senior setter Megan Rietema was named the MIAA’s Most Valuable Player while senior libero Kristen Zietse was named the MIAA’s Most Valuable Defensive Player. In addition, Calvin freshman middle-hitter Laura Danhoff was named the MIAA’s Freshman of the Year. In addition, Rietema has been named to the All-MIAA first team for the fourth straight year.  She is just the seventh individual in MIAA history to be a four-time first team All-MIAA selection. She is also the fourth from Calvin to do so, joining Leah Calsbeek (1983-1986), Katie Zondervan (2004-2007) and Rebecca Kamp (2008-2011). Joining Rietema on the All-MIAA first team from Calvin are sophomore Maggie Kamp (Orland Park, IL/Chicago Christian HS) and Zietse. They are both receiving first team All-MIAA accolades for the first time. Danhoff was named to the All-MIAA second team and was joined on the second team by Calvin junior Emily Crowe (Granger, IN/Mishawaka Penn HS).

Swimming and Diving Teams Split Dual Meets with Wheaton

The Calvin menís and womenís swimming and diving teams hosted non-conference rival Wheaton Saturday afternoon inside the Venema Aquatic Center. In the menís meet, Calvin defeated Wheaton 177-119 while the Calvin women were defeated by the Thunder 166-130. Sophomore Brett Stoughton won three individual events for the Calvin men while sophomore Michaela Rookus was a double-winner for the Calvin women. The Calvin men are now 3-3 in dual meet action while the Calvin women are now 4-3. Both teams return to action next Saturday, hosting Olivet at 1 p.m.

Women’s Volleyball Claims Five-Set Win Over Hope in MIAA Tournament Finals

A triple feature of Calvin-Hope MIAA Championship contests accumulated in an evening matchup between the top two volleyball teams in Division III. With a Hope victory in men’s soccer and a Calvin win in women’s soccer, volleyball was set up as the rubber match between the two long-time rivals. Like anyone would expect between two highly ranked and skilled teams, the match came down to the wire, with Calvin claiming the five-set victory, 20-25, 25-22, 20-25, 25-15, 15-12. With the win, second-ranked Calvin (29-1) advances to the NCAA III Tournament for the 10th consecutive year. The match marked the second consecutive year the two rivals have gone to five sets in the MIAA Tournament final. Calvin is now 9-2 against Hope in the MIAA Tournament.

Women’s Soccer Claims MIAA Tournament Title with 2-0 Win Over Hope in Title Tilt

Facing the Flying Dutch of Hope for the second time in less than a week, the Calvin women’s soccer team was looking to defeat Hope in as many chances when the Knights hosted the MIAA Tournament Final on Saturday. The Knights did just that, earning a 2-0 victory at home to claim the MIAA Tournament Championship and the conference’s automatic qualifier for the NCAA Tournament. Calvin’s two goals came early in the second half and were scored just 58 seconds apart. Sophomore Christina Drost put the Knights on the board first and senior Kelly Koets added another goal shortly after. Calvin advances into the NCAA Tournament, set to begin next weekend. The Knights first round opponent will be announced on Monday during the NCAA Selection Show, set for 1:30 p.m.

Men’s Soccer Drops Penalty Kick Shootout to Hope in MIAA Tournament Final

Calvin men’s soccer hosted the Flying Dutch of Hope College on Saturday afternoon for the MIAA Tournament Final. The teams split the regular season series, with Calvin winning 5-1 at home and losing 3-1 at Hope. Unfortunately for Calvin, a well-played match did not spell victory for the Knights, and a penalty shootout thriller eventually fell into Hope’s favor. The game finished in a 1-1 double-overtime tie with Hope winning the penalty kick shootout 5-4. Calvin junior Sean Broekhuizen scored the lone goal for the Knights with sophomore Taylor Pruis picking up an assist on the play, boosting his season assist total to 17 which matches the Calvin single-season record originally set by Joey Barone in 1991 and later matched by Nick Capisciolto in 2005.

Swimming and Diving Teams Have Mixed Results Against Wayne State and Olivet Nazarene

The Calvin menís and womenís swimming and diving teams competed against Division II power Wayne State and NAIA Olivet Nazerene Friday night at Van Noord Arena. The Calvin women split dual meets, falling to Wayne State 184-58 while defeating Olivet Nazarene 122-114. In the menís meet, Wayne State defeated Calvin 161-81 and Olivet Nazarene defeated Calvin 156-71. In the womenís competition, junior Kathryn Wrobel (Arden Hills, MN/Mounds View HS) was a winner in the 1,650 freestyle (18:04.90). Sophomore Michaela Rookus (Hudsonville/Hudsonville HS) was a close second in the 50 freestyle (24.81) while also placing second in the 100 breaststroke (1:07.67). Senior Margaret Rechel (Worthington, OH/Thomas Worthington HS) also had a strong night, placing fourth in the 200 freestyle (2:02.27) and third in the 100 freestyle (55.71). On the menís side sophomore Johnson Cochran (Mount Vernon, OH/Mount Vernon HS) took second in the 100 breaststroke (58.37) while senior Andrew Mitchell (Iron Mountain/Kingsford HS) was third in the 100 backstroke (54.06). Freshman Brett Stoughton (Centerville, IN/Centerville HS) was third in the 100 butterfly (52.87). Calvin also received strong efforts in the 1,650 freestyle from sophomore Aaron Venema (Grand Haven/Grand Haven HS) with Venema third in 16:45.87 and sophomore Caleb Meindertsma (Annondale, VA/Trinity Christian HS) fourth in 16:58.31. Both Calvin team will host non-conference rival Wheaton on Saturday at 1 p.m. in dual meet action.

Volleyball Defeats Saint Mary’s in Semifinals - Sets Up MIAA Tournament Finals Showdown with Hope

The Calvin women’s volleyball team hosted the Belles of Saint Mary’s in the second MIAA Tournament semi-final matchup on Friday evening. In the first contest between #2 Hope and #3 Trine, also played at Van Noord Arena, the Flying Dutch prevailed 25-20, 25-15, 25-18. Calvin, the top seed in the MIAA tournament, defeated Saint Mary’s, the fourth seed, in both of their regular season meetings. And, in similar fashion, with a three-set 25-11, 25-15, 25-20 sweep of the Belles on Friday evening, Calvin advanced to the MIAA Tournament Final against Hope which will be played Saturday at Van Noord Arena. Calvin held the Belles to a .051 hitting percentage while hitting .315 as a team. Junior Ellie Diepersloot and sophomore Maggie Kamp paced the Calvin attack with 10 kills apiece, while freshman Laura Danhoff tallied eight. Senior Megan Rietema dished out 27 assists while adding 9 kills and 6 digs. Senior Kristi Zietse led the Knights with 12 digs.

Maggie Kamp Named to Capital One Academic All-District Team in Volleyball

Capital One Academic All-District Volleyball Teams

Calvin College sophomore Maggie Kamp has been named the Division III Capital One Academic All-District team in volleyball. As a member of the Capital One All-District 6 team, Kamp is now eligible for Capital One Academic All-America consideration. Kamp carries a 3.91 grade point average. She is majoring in business and graphic design. Kamp has been a two-time MIAA Player of the Week this fall and was named Division III National Player of the Week once. She is among the nation’s leaders kills-per-set (4.19) and points-per-set (4.78). She also carries a hitting percentage of .333. She is the third member of her family to receive Capital One Academic All-District honors as older sisters Rebecca and Lizzie Kamp were both so honored and subsequently earned Capital One Academic All-America Honors. Kamp is part of a Calvin volleyball team that is currently 27-1 overall and ranked second in the nation. The Knights host the MIAA Tournament this weekend and will face Saint Mary’s College tonight at 7:30 p.m. inside Van Noord Arena.
