The top-ranked Calvin women’s volleyball team picked up a 25-4, 25-15, 25-8 first round NCAA III Tournament victory over Penn State-Behrend Thursday night at Van Noord Arena. Calvin advances to the regional semifinals where it will host ninth-ranked Mount Union in a 7 p.m. match Friday night with 10th-ranked Wittenberg facing 16th-ranked Chicago in the 4:30 p.m. regional semifinal on Friday. In its win over Penn State-Behrend, Calvin (30-1) scored the first 18 points of the match and never looked back. The Knights hit .395 as a team lead by sophomore Maggie Kamp with 12 kills. Freshman Laura Danhoff had nine kills while junior Emily Crowe and senior Megan Rietema had six kills apiece. Calvin tallied 10 service aces led by Rietema with four while senior Kristen Zietse had three. Junior Elise Biesboer also had a pair of aces while freshman Kielley Lemkuil had one. Calvin is hosting the NCAA III Regionals for the third consecutive year. The Knights will be facing Mount Union in the regional semifinals for the second straight year. Calvin defeated Mount Union in five sets in last year’s regional semifinals. With its victory Thursday, Calvin reached the 30-win plateau for the 13th consecutive year. Calvin is now 34-23 all-time in NCAA III Tournament play.

The Great Lakes All-Region volleyball teams have been selected and five members of the Calvin College volleyball team have receive regional accolades.Seniors Megan Rietema and Kristen Zietse along with junior Emily Crowe and sophomore Maggie Kamp have been named to the Great Lakes All-Region team. Freshman Laura Danhoff has been named the Great Lakes Region Freshman of the Year and has also been named a Great Lakes All-Region honorable mention recipient.

The season has come to a close for the Calvin men’s soccer team but the Knights have still cracked the latest set of NSCAA Division III Top 25 rankings. The Knights are ranked 25th in the latest poll, released earlier this afternoon. Calvin finished the year with an overall record of 14-5-1, finishing the year with an unbeaten streak of eight games. Calvin opened the year with an 0-3-0 record but proceeded to win 14 of its next 17 games, losing only two in that stretch. Calvin captured the MIAA regular season title with a 12-2-0 conference record, marking the seventh consecutive MIAA regular season crown for the Knights. The streak is the longest championship streak in MIAA men’s soccer history. Calvin advanced to the MIAA Tournament finals, finishing in a 1-1 double-overtime tie with Hope. The Flying Dutchmen gained the automatic bid to the NCAA III Tournament however by winning a penalty kick shootout 5-4.

Calvin College junior Travis Vegter has been named the MIAA’s Most Valuable Player in men’s soccer. Calvin freshman Stephan Hooker has also been named the MIAA’s Freshman of the Year. In addition, six Calvin players have received All-MIAA honors as Vegter, senior Zach Willis, junior Sean Broekhuizen and sophomore Taylor Pruis have been named to the first team while senior Ben Honeycutt and Hooker have been named to the second team. Calvin captured the MIAA regular season title this year for the seventh consecutive season, finishing 12-2-0 in conference play and 14-5-1 overall.

The Calvin women’s volleyball team has regained the number-one spot in the AVCA Division III Top 25 rankings. After three weeks in the number-two spot, Calvin has leap-frogged rival Hope for the top spot.Calvin received 47 of a possible 48 first place votes with Hope receiving the other first place tally. Hope is ranked second in this week’s poll. This past Saturday, the two rivals met for the third time this year with Calvin pulling out a come-from-behind five-set win in the MIAA Tournament finals at Calvin’s Van Noord Arena.During the regular season, Calvin defeated Hope in Grand Rapids while Hope defeated Calvin in Holland. Calvin will host an eight-team NCAA III Regional tournament this weekend and will face Penn State-Behrend Thursday night in an 8 p.m. first round match. Calvin will be one of four nationally-ranked teams in the regional field as 10th-ranked Mount Union, 12th-ranked Wittenberg and 20th-ranked Chicago are all part of the field.

Seven members of the MIAA champion Calvin women’s soccer team have received All-MIAA honors. Named to the All-MIAA first team from Calvin are senior midfielder Danielle Carter and sophomore forward Paige Capel and sophomore midfielder Taylor Ten Harmsel. Named to the All-MIAA second team from Calvin are senior goalkeeper Ashton Hearn, senior midfielder Heidi Scholten and sophomore defenders Sidney Kinney and Kelsey Hiegel. Calvin captured the MIAA regular season title with a 13-2-1 conference record this fall and later won the MIAA Tournament title with tournament wins over Adrian and Hope. Calvin will compete in the NCAA III Tournament this Friday in a first round game against Aurora University at 8:30 p.m. in St. Louis, Missouri.

Four Calvin fall sports teams will be in action this weekend. The Calvin women’s volleyball team will host an eight-team Great Lakes Regional Thursday, Friday and Saturday while the Calvin men’s and women’s cross country programs will host the Great Lakes Regional Championships Saturday at the Gainey Athletic Complex. In addition, the women’s soccer team will compete at a four-team NCAA III Regional hosted by Washington University of St. Louis. The Calvin men’s swimming and diving team remains ranked in the top 25 of the most recent Collegeswimming.com national poll. Fresh off a dual meet win over Wheaton this past Saturday, the Calvin men are ranked 15th in the Collegeswimming.com Top 25 poll. Calvin is back in action this Saturday, hosting Olivet at 1 p.m. in an MIAA dual meet.

The Calvin women’s soccer team will travel to St. Louis, Missouri, for a four-team NCAA III regional hosted by Washington University of St. Louis. Calvin (18-2-2) will face Aurora (18-2-0) in a first round game on Friday at 8:30 p.m. (EST). Washington U. ((17-1-0) will face St. Norbert (15-3-2) in the other Friday first round game at 6 p.m. (EST). The Calvin-Aurora game will feature a rematch of last year’s first round game won by Calvin 1-0 in overtime. Calvin will be making its 10th trip to the NCAA III Tournament including its eighth in the last nine years.

ROYAL OAK, Mich. – The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has named Calvin right side hitter Stacey Kamp its Position Player of the Week and Calvin libero Kristen Zietse its Specialty Player of the Week in volleyball for matches played through November 9. Kamp, a junior from Orland Park, Ill. (Chicago Christian HS), had a .474 hitting percentage during the MIAA tournament in leading the Knights to victories over Saint Mary’s and Hope. She had seven kills for a team-best .500 attack percentage and added six assists in the Knights’ five-set win over the Flying Dutch in the tournament championship match. Kamp is being honored as Player of the Week for the first time in her career. Zietse, a senior from Grand Rapids (Grand Rapids Christian HS), had 32 digs and only one error in 40 serve reception chances during the MIAA tournament as Calvin defeated Saint Mary’s and Hope to win the tournament. She led the Knights with a team-high 20 digs in the tournament championship match against Hope.
