GRAND RAPIDS – The number one ranked Calvin women’s volleyball team took a three set win against the Scots of Alma with scores of 25-10, 25-18, 25-14.
The Knights improved to 18-0 overall and 10-0 in the MIAA with their win Saturday against Alma (4-6 MIAA 9-10 overall) . The win keeps a 48 match win streak alive for the Knights team in conference play. As a team the Knights hit a blazing .370 hitting percentage with 56 digs and four total blocks. Maggie Kamp (Orland Park, IL; Chicago Christian HS) led the team with 12 kills and tacked on two blocks and eight digs. Emily Crowe (Granger, IN; Mishawaka Penn HS) was close behind with 11 kills and a .714 hitting percentage. Ellie Diepersloot (Madera, CA/Chowchilla HS) added 9 kills a long with Freshman Laura Danhoff (Willard, OH; Willard HS) who contributed 7 kills and 2 blocks. Megan Rietema (Grand Rapids, MI; Grand Rapids Christian HS) led all players with 33 assists and also brought 3 kills and 9 digs to the table. Senior libero Kristen Zietse lead all players with 20 digs and Junior Elise Biesboer (Elmhust, IL; Timothy Christian HS) had eight. The Knights return to action on Wednesday October 9th at Olivet. That match will begin at 6:30 p.m.

The Calvin women’s soccer team traveled to Holland on Saturday to face the Flying Dutch of Hope College. In the final game of the first half of the conference schedule, the Knights claimed a come-from-behind 2-1 victory at Van Andel Stadium behind a pair of goals from sophomore Paige Capel. Calvin improves to 9-1-1 overall and 6-1-1 in the MIAA while Hope moves to 8-2-1 and 5-2-1 in conference play. The Knights now look forward to Tuesday when they host the Scots of Alma. Earlier this season, Calvin lost to Alma in its MIAA opener 3-2.

NOTRE DAME, IN - The Calvin men’s and women’s cross country teams competed at the prestigious Notre Dame Invitational on Friday afternoon. In the women’s gold division, eighth-ranked Calvin took seventh in the 5K race with a team score of 269 points in a field made up primarily of Division I and Division II opponents. On the men’s side, 22nd-ranked Calvin took 13th in the 8K race with 334 points.In the men’s race, Calvin finished just behind 12th place Wabash (288 points) in a matchup of the top-two ranked teams in the Great Lakes Region. Division II Grand Valley State took the win with 40 points while top-ranked Division III North Central was second with 78 points.

ALBION - The top-ranked Calvin women’s volleyball team received a Friday night scare at Albion before prevailing 25-9, 25-13, 22-25, 26-24. The Knights improve to 17-0 overall and to 9-0 in the MIAA. Calvin has now won 47 consecutive MIAA matches. Friday marked Calvin’s first lost set against an MIAA opponent since the MIAA Tournament finals last fall when the Knights outlasted Hope in five sets. Maggie Kamp led Calvin in the kill department with 18 - eight of which came in the clinching fourth set. Senior setter Megan Rietema (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) just missed a triple-double with 42 assists, 10 kills and nine digs. Diepersloot was again a threat on the outside, recording 12 kills and a hiting percentage of .429. Freshman Laura Danhoff (Willard, OH/Willard HS) chipped in with seven kills. Senior libero Kristen Zietse (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) tallied 24 digs. Danhoff, Zietse and junior Elise Biesboer (Elmhurst, IL/Timothy Christian HS) tallied two service aces apiece. Calvin returns home to face Alma on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Van Noord Arena.

WEST OLIVE - Calvin’s hopes for a repeat MIAA championship took a significant hit on Thursday afternoon at an MIAA Jamboree hosted by Hope College at the Wuskowhan Player’s Club. Calvin entered the day with a six stroke lead for first place in the overall MIAA standings. At the end of the day however, the Knights trailed rival Hope by 20 strokes heading into the eighth and final MIAA Jamboree, scheduled for next Monday at the Watermark Country Club in Grand Rapids. Hope used a dominating performance on Thursday to vault into a commanding lead for first place in the overall standings, recording a team score of 290 with Trine second at 305, Alma third at 314 and Calvin fourth at 316. Calvin was led by senior Jake Hoogstrate (Grand Rapdis/Grand Rapids Christian HS) who had a 75 while sophomore Justin Crow (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) had a 78. Senior James Van Noord (Troy/Troy Athens HS) had an 80, senior Mark Allen (Oconomowoc, WI/Lake Country Lutheran HS) and 83 and freshman Brad Smith (Brunswick, ME/Brunswick HS) an 86

ADA – The Calvin women’s golf team hosted MIAA Jamboree #3 on Wednesday afternoon at the Thornapple Pointe Golf Club. The Knights took fourth at the competition with a team score of 348, just one stroke behind third place Trine and 12 strokes ahead of fifth place Hope. The Knights remain in third place in the overall MIAA standings with three total rounds left to play in the conference fall slate. The Knights are 27 strokes ahead of Trine and 29 ahead of Hope heading into a Saturday Jamboree which will be hosted by Trine at the Zollner Golf Club at 1 p.m. In Wednesday’s Jamboree, sophomore Jennie Poole (Summit, NJ/Kent Place School) led Calvin with an 84 that was good for a tie for sixth place individually. Senior Carlia Canto (Marysville/Port Huron Northern HS) had an 85 that tied her for eighth place. Sophomore Casey Harkema (Holt/Holt HS) had an 88 followed by sophomore Shara Reynolds (Big Rapids/Big Rapids HS) with a 91 and sophomore Sarah Arendsen (Wayland/Wayland HS) with a 94.

Coming off a 4-0 win over Kalamazoo this past Saturday, the Knights women’s soccer team tried to keep its offense rolling Wednesday against the visiting Comets of Olivet. After a scoreless opening 20 minutes to the contest, Calvin did just that, receiving six goals from five different players to earn a 6-0 victory. With the win, Calvin moves to 8-1-1 overall and 5-1-1 in the MIAA while the Comets drop to 5-5-0 overall and 2-5-0 in conference play. The Knights now look forward to an important away game at Hope on Saturday to complete the first half of their conference schedule. The game will be played at Van Andel Soccer Stadium and is scheduled to start at 1 p.m.

KALAMAZOO – The top-ranked Calvin women’s volleyball team improved to 16-0 overall and to 8-0 in the MIAA with a 25-13, 25-21, 25-18 win at Kalamazoo Tuesday night. Maggie Kamp led Calvin offensively with 17 kills and eight digs while junior Ellie Diepersloot (Madera, CA/Chowchilla HS) had 10 kills and a match-high hitting percentage of .692. Senior Kristen Zietse (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) had 17 digs while freshman Laura Danhoff (Willard, OH/Willard HS) had six kills and a pair of service aces. Senior setter Megan Rietema (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) was once again the fulcrum of the Calvin offense with 36 assists to go with eight digs.Calvin will now prepare to travel to Albion on Friday for a 6:30 p.m. match.

The Calvin men’s soccer team traveled to Olivet Tuesday afternoon for a conference matchup with the Comets. After a rather routine first half and a 1-0 Calvin lead at the break, three goals apiece for either squad in the second half provided fireworks and a lot of excitement, with the Knights holding on for a 4-3 road victory. Scoring goals for the Knights were sophomore Sam Hanover, junior Sean Broekhuizen, senior Zach Willis and junior Travis Vegter. Calvin stays undefeated in conference with the win, now 4-0-0 while moving to 5-3-0 overall. Olivet drops to 3-6-1 and 1-3-0 in the MIAA. The Knights now look forward to Saturday when they will host the Hornets of Kalamazoo for a 2:30 p.m. contest.
