Calvin senior Ashton Hearn has been named to the Capital One Academic All-District team in womenís soccer. Hearn is now eligible for Capital One Academic All-America consideration. Calvin is a member of District 6 which includes the states of Michigan, Wisconsin and Minnesota. A native of Port Huron and a graduate of Port Huron Northern High School, Hearn is now eligible for Capital One Academic All-America consideration. A goalkeeper, Hearn has fashioned a won-loss record of 13-2-2 this fall along with a goals-against-average of 0.74. She has five shutouts to her career this fall. Hearn has 28 career shutouts and an overall won-loss record of 48-12-5. She has helped the Calvin womenís soccer team move into a share of first place in the MIAA standings with a 11-2-1 conference mark and an overall record of 14-2-2. The Knights are currently ranked 25th in the most recent Division III Top 25 poll conducted by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. Hearn is a speech pathology major at Calvin and has been a regular member of the MIAA Academic Honor Roll and Calvin Deanís List. 2013-14 Capital One Academic All-Districtģ Men’s and Womenís Soccer Teams, selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America, have been released to recognize the nationís top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom. Capital One has been the entitlement rights holder to CoSIDAís Academic All-America teams programs since 2011.

Calvin College junior Travis Vegter has received yet another honor. Vegter has been named to the Division III Capital One Academic All-District team in menís soccer. He is now eligible for Capital One Academic All-America consideration. Calvin is a member of District 6 which includes the states of Michigan, Wisconsin and Minnesota. A native of Hudsonville and a graduate of Hudsonville Unity Christian High School, Vegter is a biology major. He was a member of the MIAA Academic Honor Roll a year ago. Vegter is in the midst of a sensational junior soccer campaign as he has scored 24 goals along with three assists for a total of 51 points. His goal total is the second-highest single-season total in Calvin menís soccer history. He was recently named the Division III National Player of the Week by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. The MIAA preseason men’s basketball coaches’ poll has been released and rivals Calvin and Hope have been picked to finish first and second respectively. Defending MIAA champion Calvin received six of a possible seven first place votes while Hope received two first place votes. Adrian was picked to finish third followed by Trine in fourth. A year ago, Calvin finished 26-4 overall and on top of the MIAA standings with a 13-1 conference mark. Calvin returns three starters and nine letterwinners from last year’s team. Combined, Calvin or Hope have won at least a share of 54 of the last 58 MIAA men’s basketball titles.The two rivals are scheduled to meet on January 11 at Calvin’s Van Noord Arena and on February 5 at Hope.

The Calvin menís and womenís swimming and diving teams have cracked the first Division III rankings compiled by Collegeswimming.com. The Calvin women are ranked 16th while the Calvin men are also ranked 16th. Calvin women’s soccer played host to Kalamazoo on Wednesday evening. The Knights entered the contest three points behind Hope in the conference standings, and with the win, would tie up the Flying Dutch for the MIAA lead as Hope was not in action. Calvin defeated the Hornets 4-0 at Kalamazoo earlier this season, and with a 2-1 win at Zuidema Field on Wednesday, swept the season series.Calvin moves into a tie with Hope at the top of the MIAA standings with the win, improving to 11-2-1 in the conference and 14-2-2 overall. Kalamazoo falls to 6-8-0 in league play and 7-10-0 overall. The Knights return to action on Saturday when they travel to Olivet for a noon matchup against the Comets.

ADRIAN - Calvin maintained a share of first place in the MIAA standings with a 25-23, 25-19, 25-20 victory at Adrian Tuesday night. Ranked second nationally, Calvin is now 26-1 overall and 14-1 in the MIAA. The Knights remain tied for first place with Hope which also moved to 14-1 in league play on Tuesday, defeating Kalamazoo in straight sets.Sophomore Maggie Kamp (Orland Park, IL/Chicago Christian HS) pounded home 14 kills to lead the Knight attack. Freshman Laura Danhoff (Willard, OH/Willard HS) had seven kills while senior setter Megan Rietema (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) had six kills, 31 assists, six digs and six blocks. Junior Emily Crowe (Granger, IN/Mishawaka Penn HS) added six block assists.Senior Kristen Zietse (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) had 10 digs from the back row. Junior Elise Biesboer (Elmhurst, IL/Timothy Christian HS) chipped in with nine digs.As a team, Calvin had 10 total blocks. Calvin will close out its MIAA regular season campaign on Friday when it hosts Kalamazoo at 7 p.m.

KALAMAZOO - Calvin men’s soccer traveled to Kalamazoo on Tuesday evening looking to even the season series with the Hornets. The Knights fell to Kalamazoo 3-0 earlier this season at Zuidema Field, one of Calvin’s two conferences losses this season. The game was back-and-forth for all 90 minutes of regulation, and after a last-minute equalizer, the Knights earned a 4-3 win in overtime, taking their second straight conference matchup in extra-time. Sophomore Sam Hanover scored the game-winner in overtime, slamming home a quick pass from junior Sean Broekhuizen after sophomore Taylor Pruis had ignited the play with a corner kick into the box. Calvin will now prepare to travel to Alma on Saturday for a 2:30 p.m. contest.

Calvin College junior Travis Vegter continues to add to his collection of honors. On Tuesday afternoon, Vegter was named the Division III National Player of the Week by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. A native of Hudsonville and a graduate of Hudsonville Unity Christian High School, Vegter scored five goals and added one assist last week in leading Calvin to victories over Adrian and Olivet. in a 5-1 win over Adrian, he scored two goals along with one assist. He then netted a hat trick on Saturday, scoring all three of Calvin’s goals in a 3-2 sudden-death overtime win. The hat-trick performance was his second of the year. He has now scored in five consecutive games. A striker, Vegter currently has 23 goals and three assists on the year for 49 points. His goal total matches the second-highest single-season total in Calvin men’s soccer history. He is currently ranked third in NCAA III men’s soccer in total goals scored, second in goals-per-game average (1.53) and second in points-per-game average (3.27). Calvin is back in action tonight when it travels to Kalamazoo for a 7 p.m. conference game. Vegter is the third Calvin athlete this fall to receive national player of the week honors. Earlier this fall, Calvin freshman Cassice Vince was named the Division III national athlete of the week in women’s cross country and two weeks ago, Calvin sophomore Maggie Kamp was named the Division III national player of the week in volleyball.

ROYAL OAK, Mich. Ė The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has named Calvinís Johnson Cochran and Michaela Rookus its Athletes of the Week in swimming and diving for meets through October 26. Cochran, a sophomore from Mount Vernon, Ohio (Mount Vernon HS) won both breaststroke events in leading Calvin to an MIAA dual meet win Saturday over Albion. He set an Albion pool record in winning the 100-yard breaststroke in :58.83, and also won the 200 breaststroke in 2:12.46. In addition, Cochran won the 100 breaststroke during a Friday dual meet against Division II Grand Valley State. He is being honored as Athlete of the Week for the first time this season and second time in his career. Rookus, a sophomore from Hudsonville (Hudsonville HS), won three events Saturday in leading the Knights to an MIAA dual meet victory over Albion. She won the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:08.68, the 200 breaststroke in 2:32.43 and the 200 individual medley in 2:15.84. One night earlier, Rookus won the 100-yard freestyle in :53.75 and had a season-best :24.64 in the 50 freestyle in a meet against Division II members Grand Valley State and Hillsdale. She is being honored as Athlete of the Week for the first time in her career.

ROYAL OAK, Mich. Ė The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has named Calvin forward Travis Vegter its Offensive Player of the Week in menís soccer for games played through Oct. 26. Vegter, a junior from Hudsonville (Unity Christian HS), scored five goals and added an assist in leading the Knights to a pair of MIAA victories that moved them into sole possession of first place in the conference. He scored twice and set up a third goal in a 5-1 win over Adrian, then scored all three goals, including the game-winner in overtime, in a 3-2 victory over Olivet. Vegter leads the MIAA in goals (15) and points (33) in league play. He is being honored as Player of the Week for the third time this season and fourth time in his career.
