ROYAL OAK, Mich. – The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has named Calvin outside hitter Maggie Kamp its Player of the Week in volleyball for matches played through September 8. Kamp, a sophomore from Orland Park, Ill. (Chicago Christian HS), had 47 kills and a hitting percentage of .481 as the Knights swept all three of their MIAA matches for the week. She had 19 kills and eight digs in a victory over Alma along with 16 kills, a .556 hitting percentage and eight digs as Calvin swept Olivet. Kamp is being honored as Player of the Week for the second time in her career. Calvin is back in action on Wednesday when it travels to Trine for a 6:30 p.m. match.

MILWAUKEE, Wisc. - For the second straight night, Calvin was golden in overtime as the Knights scored a sudden-death “golden goal” to defeat North Park 2-1 in overtime in the championship game of the Milwaukee School of Engineering Raider Invitational. The victory came on the heels of a 1-0 overtime victory over Loras College the night before for Calvin. The Knights are now 3-0 on the year heading into MIAA play which begins in earnest on Monday as Calvin will travel to league rival Alma for a 4 p.m. contest.In Saturday’s overtime win over North Park, Calvin trailed 1-0 early but came back to tie the game on a goal by sophomore Taylor Ten Harmsel (Holland/Holland Christian HS) midway through the first half. Calvin then cranked up the pressure in the second half, peppering the North Park goal including a shot late in the second half by sophomore Paige Capel (Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS) that rang off the cross bar. Calvin finally broke through 2:22 into the first overtime as freshman Allie Corp (Livonia/Stevenson HS) took a through ball pass from Capel and slipped a shot past the North Park goalkeeper for the game-winner.

MARSHALL - The Calvin women’s golf team finished the two-day, 36-hole Olivet Fall Invitational Tournament in 13th place with a final team score of 724 strokes. Bethel College (IN) led the 18-team field with a final team score of 637 strokes. Calvin opened the tournament on Friday with a team score of 360 on Friday but slipped back a few strokes on Saturday with a team score of 364. Senior Carlia Canto (Marysville/Port Huron Northern HS) led the Knights overall with a two-day total of 163 strokes (76-87) that was good for 12th place individually. Sophomore Jennie Poole (Summit, NJ/Kent Place School) was next at 176 (87-89). Sophomore Casey Harkema (Holt/Holt HS) had a strong Saturday showing, carding a round of 86 to finish with a 186 (100-86). Rounding out Calvin’s finishers were sophomore Sarah Arendsen (Wayland/Wayland HS) at 199 (97-102) and freshman Amira Bousaab (Grand Rapids/Northpointe Christian HS) at 216 (107-109). Amy Worthington of Trine University earned overall medalist honors with a two-day total of 154 (78-76). Calvin is back in action on Tuesday, competing at the North Central Classic in Naperville, Illinois.

MILWAUKEE, Wis. - Repeated lightning strikes have caused the cancellation of the MSOE men’s soccer match with Calvin. The game was called with just over 33 minutes remaining and the scored tied at 1-1. According to NCAA rules, the result and statistics will not count. The match was the consolation contest for the Raider Invitational. The tournament is expected to resume with the championship game following the current lightning delay.At the conclusion of the tournament, Calvin junior Travis Vegter was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Offensive player after scoring two goals in Friday’s game vs Loras. Vegter was also named to the all-tournament team and joined on the all-tournament team by freshman teammate Stephan Hooker (Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS).

Calvin remained unbeaten on the 2013 season Saturday afternoon as it defeated visiting Olivet 25-10, 25-11, 25-10 at Van Noord Arena. Ranked second nationally, the Knights are now 7-0 overall and 3-0 in the MIAA. Calvin clicked on all cylinders right from the opening serve as the Maroon and Gold hit at a .462 clip as a team. Sophomore Maggie Kamp (Orland Park, IL/Chicago Christian HS) had another huge match, racking up 16 kills, eight digs and an attack percentage of .556. Freshman Laura Danhoff (Willard, OH/Willard HS) had a career-high nine kills and a hitting percentage of .643. Senior setter Megan Rietema (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) had four kills, 31 assists and six digs. Senior libero Kristen Zietse (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) added a career-high six service aces to go with nine digs. As a team, Calvin had 12 service aces as junior Elise Biesboer (Elmhurst, IL/Timothy Christian HS), Rietema and junior Laura Hop (Holland/Holland Christian HS) added two aces apiece. Calvin returns to action next Wednesday when it travels to Trine for a 6:30 p.m. match.

MARSHALL - Calvin closed out the first day of competition at the Olivet Fall Invitational with a team score of 360. The Knights are in 11th place in a field of 18 teams. The tournament is being held at the Medalist Golf Club and will conclude with a second 18-hole round on Saturday. Senior Carlia Canto (Marysville/Port Huron Northern HS) continued her torrid start to the fall season with a round of 76 that has her in first place in the individual standings. Sophomore Jennie Poole (Summit, NJ/Kent Place School) had Calvin’s second best effort with a round of 87 while sophomore Sarah Arendsen (Wayland/Wayland HS) had a 97. Sophomore Casey Harkema (Holt/Holt HS) had a round of 100 with freshman Amira Bousaab (Grand Rapids/Northpointe Christian HS) rounding out Calvin’s lineup with a round of 107. MILWAUKEE, Wisc. - The Calvin women’s soccer team claimed a dramatic 1-0 overtime victory over Loras College in a first round game of the Milwaukee School of Engineering Raider Classic Friday night. Senior Kelly Koets (Grandville/Calvin Chrsitian HS) scored the game-winning goal 3:49 into overtime as she redirected a set piece sent in by sophomore Sydney Kinney (Ada/Grand Rapids Christian HS). Calvin advances to Saturday’s championship game and will take on either host Milwaukee School of Engineering or North Park. Saturday’s title tilt is set to begin at 7:30 p.m. (EST). Calvin (2-0-0) held a 15-13 shots at goal advantage in the win. The game marked a rematch of a second round NCAA III Tournament game from a year ago that was won by Loras 4-2. Senior Ashton Hearn (Port Huron/Port Huron Northern HS) was credited with six saves in gaining the shutout win for the Knights.

ALMA - The second-ranked Calvin women’s volleyball team improved to 6-0 overall and to 2-0 in the MIAA with a 25-17, 25-19, 25-16 victory at Alma Friday night. Sophomore Maggie Kamp (Orland Park, IL/Chicago Christian HS) matched a career-high with 19 kills in the win. It marked the second time she has recorded 19 kills this year and the third time in her career. Junior Emily Crowe (Granger, IN/Mishawaka Penn HS) had seven kills while senior Megan Rietema (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) and junior Ellie Diepersloot (Madera, CA/Chowchilla HS) had six kills apiece. Rietema added 33 assists and 16 digs. Senior Kristen Zietse (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) was superb with 24 digs in the back row. Freshman Laura Danhoff (Willard, OH/Willard HS) also made an impact with four kills, eight digs and five block assists. Junior Stacey Kamp (Orland Park, IL/Chicago Christian HS) chipped in with four block assists. Calvin is back in action on Saturday when it hosts Olivet at 1 p.m. in an MIAA match inside Van Noord Arena.

MILWAUKEE, Wisc. - The Calvin men’s soccer team dropped another hard-fought contest on Friday, falling 3-2 to the nationally-ranked DuHawks of Loras College in a first round game of the Milwaukee School of Engineering Raider Classic. A national semifinalist a year ago and ranked third nationally, Loras (3-0-0) took a 1-0 lead on a goal in the 39th minute of play. Calvin (0-3-0) was able to tie the game at one on a goal by junior Travis Vegter (Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS) in the 52nd minute with senior Ben Honeycutt (Grandville/South Christian HS) drawing an assist on the play. The Knights then suffered two bad breaks on long free kicks. The first came on an “own” goal as a Loras free kick was mistakenly headed backward into the Calvin goal by a Knight defender in the 60th minute. In the 68th minute, another long free kick was sent into the Calvin box. The free kick was not touched and subsequently took a hard bounce up and over Calvin goalkeeper Andrew Claucherty (Sterling Heights/Bishop Foley HS) and into the net to give the Duhawks a 3-1 lead. Calvin came back to within a goal at 3-2 as Vegter scored on an unassisted goal with 14 minutes left to play but the Knights could not score again. Calvin will take on Milwaukee School of Engineering in the consolation game on Saturday at noon.

MARSHALL - The Calvin men’s golf team opened its 2013 MIAA fall campaign with a fifth place team score of 324 at the opening MIAA Jamboree. Thursday’s MIAA Jamboree was held at the Medalist Golf Club with Albion College serving as host.Calvin finished one stroke ahead of sixth place Kalamazoo and two strokes behind fourth place Albion. Hope took first place team honors with a score of 317. Junior James Van Noord (Troy/Troy Athens HS) had a stellar outing for Calvin, recording a score of 74 that was good for a tie for second place individually. Senior Jake Hoogstrate (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) was next for Calvin with a 77, good for a tie for eighth place individually. Senior Mark Allen (Oconomowoc, WI/Lake Country Lutheran HS) had an 84 with sophomore Justin Crow (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) and freshman Brad Smith (Brunswick, Maine/Brunswick HS) rounding out Calvin’s finishers with scores of 89 and 91 respectively. Marty Predmesky of Alma claimed medalist honors with a round of 71. Calvin is back in action on September 13 when it competes at an MIAA Jamboree hosted by Adrian at the Lenawee Country Club.
